I thought I would post this here because my question is a technical question about my Lotus and not a Ferrari. I thought maybe Doug, Adam, Steve, or Joey might be able to help.

When the air conditioner is on and I am slowing the car down the engine is stalling. I can start it back up and it runs with no problems, no engine warning lights or anything. It seems to only happen when the air is on, but I suppose that could be a coincidence. I asked about this problem on the Lotus forum and several guys feel that my IAC (idle air control) valve needs to be cleaned or replaced. They say that the job is no big deal after you find and remove the IAC but it is a chore to get to that point.

So should I attempt this job on my own or take it in to one of the guys on Bardstown Rd? I do not know that much about the mechanics of my cars, but I very much want to learn, my fear is I would do more damage on my own.

    Your thoughts???

    Matt

I was thinking also it was you idle air control valve. It can get clogged up and the mechanism may get stuck close which would cause your engine to choke and stall. If it happens with your A/C on it might be due to the A/C putting a load on the engine and making the situation worse. If you want I bet I can fix it. I have done several in vipers. Typically the IAC valve is located around the throttle bodies.

Also check plugs...they can tell you alot about what's going on inside the engine. But I bet you it has to do with the IAC valve. I would take good care of the car....people on bardstown...do ya trust them? LOL!

    Matt,
People on Bardstown road be fine ( been there and done it ) but they don't usually use the Petrolium jelly so it really hurts.....Adam seems like a knowledgeable person ( yes i know he doesn't like Ricers j/k ) but honestly if he can take on a Lambo heck he can fix this IAC issue..plus you can watch and learn more about your car if done by an enthusiasts esp 1:1 basis.

Sounds like you are up to the challenge! I can try to help, I really want to learn as much as I can.

    Matt

  6. I would try fixing it myself first. Lotus uses a lot of GM parts. That sounds like what I would try first. Get a new one, let me know when you are getting together, I can supervise Adam and get him off to a good start showing him where your engine is located! You might look for a shop manual also, if it's available. It might tell how to pull up any codes that are in your computer.

Wait until after Tuesday to do this. I am leaving for a little vacation tomorrow and I would love to sit back and watch you all screw up Matt's car some more:) I can then step in and help remedy the situation to get him home:)
It actually sounds like an easy fix. 3 people and a 12 pack can probably fix it.
Adam, if your garage is occupied with, we can use mine.

    Matt,

My Esprit used to do that....I was told by an Lotus tech that the ECU needed to be reset....try unhooking the battery cables, wait a bit, and hook them back up...should reset the ECU. Worked for me !

Thanks, I will try that. But because Doug, Joey, & Adam broke my strut on the boot I can't get to my battery until I get my new strut (sometime next week). Lotus put the battery in a tight spot!

I have most all of the factory service manuals, and a 90 SE with a bunch of mods. If you need some info. I can fax you or whatever.

I live in Florida but am orginally from ky. (Pewee Valley)
I'll be there in a couple of weeks to take my nephews to the fair.

I think i'm going to bring my 355 spider.

I usually stay with my sister in Crestwood of hwy 22.
The last time I was there I spotted a Esprit in a garage a couple doors down form her house. Is that anyone here?

  23. I see it driving downtown sometimes. That car has spent plenty of time at Harrods Creek Imports getting worked on. He's owned it for several years.

Is Harrods Creek Imports " the " place for exotics in Louisville?
    Who else works on them?
Is Bluegrass Motorsports the only exotic dealer?

What about St Mathews Imports ?
I went to High school with one of the owners sons (Doug)

  25. Harrod's Creek Imports is the same place that was Mooser's Garage. They work on some Jags, a Testarossa, but mainly Mercedes/Volvo.

You went to High School with my brother, Mark. Doug had a 80 Z28 that he bought from a friend of mine. I drove that car all over your state back in the good old days.
