How come I get terrible radio reception (FM) with my stock antenna and a late model Alpine head unit? Is there a trick ?

Yes, there is a trick. Bad reception can usually be cured by going into your trunk and following the thick lead (rather than the two power wires) from the antenna to the extension lead that runs into the car towards the stereo. Unplug the two cables in the rear and rub some steel wool to remove the corrosion on the male and in the female ends. Follow up with dielectric grease on both ends and reconnect.

If the reception hasn't improved greatly, then you'll need to clean off the other end at the stereo. (The cord is essentially just a long extension from the stereo antenna lead to the antenna lead.) You can either slide the stereo out or try to get at the cable from behind.

If reception hasn't improved at that point, the extension cord has probably come apart inside-- most likely in the engine bay from heat cycles and rubbing, and you'll need to buy another one (from a car parts store for about $6.) It's a bit of a pain to route it, because you need to remove some interior parts, but I just did this in a GT4 (which is harder than a GTB or GTS). It just takes a screwdriver, a wrench and an hour or so (depending on what is exactly in your route given the model and year.)

If you dont find corrosion on the 328 antenna coax connection at the rear of the car you might find that it was never plugged all the way in. I used to install radios in 328's when they were new and I used to find them 1/2 way plugged in a lot. Is the antenna still the factory antenna? It should be a bosch autojet.... Let me know if I can help?

You wouldn'nt happen to have any Bosch Autojets ( or any other semi-auto antenna) you would be willing to part with, would you?
