Just because it has a 6 Cylinder engine does not mean it belongs in the Dino section. The 296 in no way represents what the Dino was to the Ferrari lineage and I'm happy that Ferrari has continued to leave the Dino name and concept alone.
I can't say I care for the car in the poster. As it happens I have had the very special pleasure to bounce back and forth ideas and drawings for a modern Dino with another board member who is a prominent car designer. We discussed the concept of a modern Dino that could adhere to modern consumer demands while still being true to the concept of an 'inexpensive' Ferrari sub-brand that would compete with the Porsche Caymans and lower spec 911's. Due to privacy considerations I cannot share our communications or drawings but what I will say is that the new 296 in no way meets the mark and TBH I do not think they were trying to do a Dino anyways. There is a whole lot more to a Dino than having a 6 cylinder motor in the back and to parallel the new car to it merely because of its piston count is way off the mark. I remember getting equally frustrated when McLaren released the MP4-12C and everyone and their sister immediately compared it to the F1. It would be difficult to imagine two more different cars yet for ages all you ever read were baseless and ignorant parallels being drawn. Rant over
+ 1 Like every car manufacturers "revival" models, whether from BMW (Mini), Dodge (Challenger), Ferrari (GTO's, this ^^, et. al.) they're all conceived (and produced) merely for marketing purposes, not as direct "lineage", but some apparently sell like hot cakes just because of the "perception" those marketing guys/gals are able to create and earn their pay for.
New Dino dead? I suppose this shows Ferrari didn't go in that direction despite the years of rumors. I like it (the 296...).
IMHO the smaller size is definitely a plus (all modern Ferraris are entirely too long and wide), but the turbo/hybrid stuff, not so much.
I thought I was following one of these couple of days ago, but closer look revealed it had Chevy "bowtie" on its rear panel.
