I love these cars, and would love to buy one someday. What would be concidered the cream of the crop, 365,400, or 412. Rarest of the colors, 5spd or auto, and what would a perfect car cost, not concourse but as new??? Thanks for any input you have.

Black with black leather, series 1 automatic 400i is the most desirable!

Thanks for the replies...your black car is indeed very nice. After doing some research, it seems that the 365, is carburated, and has a six tail light arrangement. I also noticed that the early cars run knock offs and spinners. Did these cars ever come with Borani wire wheels. Any unusual interiors on the early cars?? I know the 365 GTC's had some great color combos.........Keep the pictures coming

Going with your original question on what is most desirable/sought after. All of these models are grey market to the US although in the later years the factory did let the US dealers place orders on behalf of their US clients. This means that there never was a large quantity that came into the US. Dave Stacy has records on the exact quantities of each model that he has posted on F-chat previously.

For desirability/collectability always the manual over an automatic.

365 is more desireable than the Series 1 400 (Weber), 400 over the 400i (injection). Desirability/collectability is not necessarily the same as drivability; that is a more personal decision.

As for the 412 I will defer to others for their input on the desirability/collectability ranking.

    My .02

No, they're the brake discs (rotors).

    Expensive wino,

This is not the series of car that you buy for its investment potential. Cars from this series are generally more expensive to maintain properly than they are worth. Thus buy the one that appeals to you.

The early cars with the carbs require more upkeep and are more rustprone but sound better.

The manual transmission cars seem to have a VERY heavy clutch, thus making them good for open roads but poor for short hops.

The later cars have rustproofing and Bosch injection, as well as being younger (thus there is a better chance that the soft bits don't yet need to be replaced).

If you are serious, spend time reading the threads in the forum and buy Dave's CD compilation of cars known to him.

    Regards,

    Art S.

This photo was taken before the brakes were refurbished. However, they are now virtually silent.

    xpensivewino,

Take note that there are some shape differences for the 412 from the earlier 365 and 400. That may or may not make a difference to you.
