Many on this forum know that my daily for of ground transportation is a "low end" Ferrari: 400i #049773 (not a 456 or 612). Some of you may not know that my most common mode of air transportation for business is an equally low end Gulfstream GIII (not a GIV or GV). Here are the two bottom feeders together. :)

    Alan,

There is absolutely nothing low end about using a Gulfstream. Running the Gulfstream probably makes the operating costs for the 400 seem like pocket change!

What s/n on the G-III? HPN or TEB based?

Actually, I would say that running the 400 makes the Gulfstream look cheap! Good psychology there.

Great photo, Alex! Proof that only real scum drive 400s.

    Aidan,

Know you are having fun but have a current inventory run with a rotable Gulfstream brake assembly at $32,500 cost. Just got an industry derived annual operating cost estimate for a G-IV doing 600 hours at $2.5M (no capital cost). [G-IV has newer generation engines so it probably has lower fuel burn).

As a joke Alan might only be able to have a 400 because after the G-III expenses that is all that is left.

All joking aside, any Gulfstream is a magnificent ride. Great performance and real comfortable inside; just not the economy solution.

    Jeff

A G3 is a magnificent airplane. Very much like the 400-- probably similar vintage, in fact?

Did you ever get the engine rebuilt, or are you the reason for the high price of oil? Wasn't the car using somethin like 6qts of oil between every fill up?

Aircraft is N800TD. This picture was taken on Landmark's ramp at HPN just before my departure for MSY.

All kidding aside the GIII is a very nice aircraft. I fly N800TD a lot (went to MSY and SFO last week on different trips) and it is a great way to get there if you have to go. It is also, for what it is, reasonably economical: We fly this aircraft on a "jet card" type program and it is just as comfortable a a IV or V for significantly less cost per hour.

Yup, all my fault. :) The car goes from max to min on the dipstick in one tank of gas. That would not be so bad, except that the range between min and max is 4.5 qts. :( I do plan to rebuild the top end of the motor as soon as my BB motor is done, but I am in no great rush as the cars runs great and does not foul plugs (problem is valve guides on passenger side head - there is a thread somewhere on how I have conclusively proved this).

The funny thing is that the GIII actually costs SOMEONE considerably more to fly per hour than a IV or V, in direct costs! Making it a bargain for the charter customer.

Although, it's not dissimilar to your 400-- the direct costs on the 400 are more than those on a new 612, also.

Great plane and I think there will be some bargains in the next coming months, it is really getting harder to fly planes with this older turbines as the fuel prices have been rising very much and it hits the cost directly. I fly a lot from Mexico to USA and it is really much more expensive to fuel in the US, in Mexico I get jet fuel for around $3.5 a gallon while in Texas it is nearly $5.5 and it is one of the cheaper states I believe in NY it is almost $9 per gallon, this things are drinking around $2,500 - $3,000 worth of fuel in the first flight hour.

Nice post Alex but what mode of transportation do you use at your destination in order to keep those 'bottom feeder' credentials intact ?

    A gas-guzzling stretch hummer maybe.........

    Aleventhal,

Have you tried MMO? Seriously, you might be suprised. It could seriously reduce your oil consumption.

Have tried MMO. No improvement - would likely fix a stuck ring, but can't help worn valve guides... :(
