I really hope that changes are not just to make the cars look better. We've had too much emphasis on appearances over competition.

Next year will be understeer central... supplemented by a big dose of power oversteer. Should make for some unpredictable handling and some very interesting tire deg issues.

Call me shallow but I prefer Jolie over Streisand

    You're shallow.

    Happy now?

But you have to give me that: I had a good nose for picking Streisand as an example.

Please forgive my ignorance, but is the new ERS "always on" (for lack of a better term), or is it driver controlled like KERS?

It will essentially be always on. ERS harvesting and mapping will be very trick stuff and it is not very clear what will be allowed and not allowed. It's been conjectured that engine/ERS maps will have ERS operating on a sliding scale which in essence means ERS will be always operating, but not to its full potential based on RPM or wheel slippage, call it a new type of traction control if you like. ERS will be best used at lower rpm to cover up the torque loss during the turbo lag period. At higher rpm where turbo lag is less present, I believe ERS will be mapped to come into play only when teams know tire slippage will not be an issue. Because these engines will have so much more torque with both systems 'on', it is very important to understand tires and slippage points respective to downforce and speed. Maps will be multidimensional extremely complicated things which will be game-changers for some. My guess is that this technology and its development will be the primary differentiating factor between teams.

Actually, power distribution between combustion engine and electric machine in hybrid cars (which is exactly what we are talking about here) is exactly my area of research :)
It will be very interesting to see the exact rules and implementations. There'd be an amazing playground if it wasn't just static maps...

Not to worry. They've only changed the rules to fit with what who they want to win has already designed. That's all. F1 SOP :)

Oh fabulous! Glad we have an expert here.

Yes, I call it a 5 dimensional ERS mapping playground *if* teams are allowed to treat the ERS with varied power output rather than like an on/off switch. Mechanical tire slippage, aerodynamic traction capabilities, mapping is going to be very interesting and hugely complicated. So many variables to tune for

In fairness, the vast majority of these rules were set over a year back. IIRC, the first iteration is well over a year old now. Only pretty minor changes in this release.

    Ok, gotcha, good find, thanks!

    Cheers,

The main input parameters will be torque demand (=pedal position), engine speed and battery state of charge (SOC). Maybe vehicle speed. From these, a mapping is calculated which defines the best* power split (output power = engine power + electric machine power) for every input combination, which is then applied when the car is driving.
Limiting factors like tire slip etc. will be handled afterwards, at least that is the common approach in road cars. The input space would get too big otherwise, it's already not easy to deal with three variables (engine speed, torque demand, SOC).

Things could totally change however if they were able to implement functions which would calculate the power distribution in real time. That's what the research in the car industry (and thus me) is currently focusing on, but given how tightly the ECU is closed, I believe it'll be only the above mentioned mapping.

    * the definition of "best", ie the optimization criteria, are most interesting here!

At least compare 2 ladies of the same age man; Streisand could be Jolie's mother :D.

Are wheel speed sensors allowed? Thought they were banned, along with ABS. Maybe I'm wrong about the sensors.

Good point! Then, managing tire slip is up to the driver :)
