Hi, After driving a bit in 90 degree weather, while stopped at a stoplight, my oil pressure warning light came on at idle. It was for about a minute. It went away as soon as I applied throttle. Did not come back the rest of the trip. Oil temperature was below halfway point Coolant temperature was below halfway point Car runs strong No odd noises Sometimes the Oil Pressure Needle moves around a good bit at constant RPM idle, not always Oil change done less than 1,000 miles ago. What do you guys think might be the issue? Thanks!
It is not uncommon for the oil pressure sender to bonk out after 20+ years. If you are 100% certain the pressure is indeed fine, then the most likely culprit is the sender. https://www.ricambiamerica.com/135940-sending-unit.html
Well, could be a few things... 1. Your oil is low 2. Sender is faulty Oil level is easy to check so do that first. Easy to underfill or overfill as I understand it if someone is not familiar. If all good, then for sure replace the sender. Check the harness connector for any oil that might have seeped through. I don't know what this sender is like exactly, but on other vehicles I have where the oil sender went bad, it was from a bad seal that allowed oil to leak into the harness connector. Oil in the connector would be a for sure sign the sender has failed.
The sender is crap, replace it and get the silicone sock to protect it. If you oil level is good and the motor is running fine, I doubt it actually has low oil pressure. Not a common thing on these motors, but the gauge issues are widespread. I also had a similar issue where the oil pressure would peg to the right, I ended up replacing the stepper motor in the cluster.
