I'm looking at the TEC grills and they come with a propane or a natural gas set up that you can hook into the gas line at home. Does anybody have any experience with the differences?

The gas line is more convenient and will give you more btu's, though for your purposes its moot. Biggest negative with a direct line is when you forget to turn off the gas after cooking. Its not like you are limited to wasting just a 10 gallon tank are ya!

Go natural gas. I love it. Easy, never a bottle to refill, better quality fire.

I like propane. Mainly because depending on wind or the occasional sprinkle, I like being able to move my grill around the deck, or possibly in the garage to bar b que.

I actually own a TEC, it's my 2nd. I wore the first one out. Mine is propane and I have had no problems with it. I like the fact that it's mobile and I can put it whereever I want, I'm not limited to single place in the back yard. Other than that, I can't imagine that there's much of a difference. You don't need the extra BTU's that NG will give you, the thing already gets so hot you can hardly cook on it.

Beware: do NOT use 'high' heat and walk away, your steak will turn hockey puck quickly.

I like LP because I can move the grill around the back yard if I want to.

Natural gas all the way. Pay for a quality unit (Ducane, PGS, Weber pro, etc)and you will get a lifetime guarantee so you don't have to worry about getting another unit in a couple of years. Higher BTU for searing meats and fish. Nothing worse than running out of propane in the middle of cooking.

I was in a slightly different situation when I bought my Kenmore Elite grill. I had just installed a deck on the condo and knew that we would not be living there very long (less than a year) and when we moved into the new house we would have to put a deck or patio on the house and it would not happen quickly (we moved in in August and I am contracted for 2nd week of June for the contractors to install a stamped concrete patio...I will post photos). I had the option of NG or LP and I decided on LP so that I could use the grill in the garage while I waited at the new house to get the deck/patio done. Had I been in the house with a deck/patio I would have spent the extra hundred bucks on the grill and had the gas line installed at the house. Keeping LP tanks full on a 6 burner grill is sorta a pain in the butt...I ALWAYS have an extra in the garage.

Keep in mind, when you are shopping for a BBQ/Grille, BTU ratings are for the total heat (energy) that the burners are rated to, regardless of NG or LPG.

Now back to the big Q ... if the Grille is going to be very close to a NG source, and you are not planning on moving the Grille, this is a great choice. It offers the big convienence of not running out of gas, that is, along as you pay your gas bill on time.

If you are moving the Grille around, go with LPG.

Most BBQ/Grilles are configured for LPG. To convert the Grille to NG, larger jets are installed.

LPG requires a smaller jet than NG. LPG has much more energy per volume than NG, hense when you install a NG kit, the jets are larger to accomodate higher flow rates to keep the BTU rating.

Now if you get a big monster grille (1,000,000,000 BTUs or more) and you are planning on heaters/fire features on the same NG line, you may have a size (gas line) problem.

Bottom line, go for convienence ... you can't go wrong.

Thanks for all of the thoughtful replies. I will miss my charcoal but I'm just concerned about about the fire possibilities on the deck where I have it and I think the TEC grill seems to have a lot of the pluses of charcoal with the convenience of gas
