Before summer I am thinking of sending off my LP400S to have the engine/transmission gone through...new clutch, plugs, water pump, wires, tune-up, seals/gaskets, anything engine related that may need to be done.
Any rough estimates as to the cost?

I was figuring on more like 15-20K so around 10K would be great. I just want to make sure that everything is up to par before I set out this August for the Reunion in Monterey.

    Warning!!!!! WALLETECTOMY ALERT!!!!!!!!

That number assumes that nothing is really wrong and nobody sells you something you don't need.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

California seems a little far away to send a car for service, unless you want to wait til August and have them deliver it to the show.

I dont recall saying there was no talent in "fly over country"?

I think it was you that made the reckless comment......??

Who have you used on your Lamborghini or Lamborghini's?

Not even sure you own one....no disrespect made, do you?

    Who do you use?

I recommend we both stick to what we know.

You sell Lamborghinis, your presence in the market is well known.

I fix Lamborghinis, my work speaks for itself.

The Midwest is admittedly a small market compared to the coasts but there are some of us that take pride in our work and get a bit testy at the thought of hauling a car cross-country for restoration or routine maintenance.

Some people really have sent cars to Italy for work. What are they thinking? Must be the "more money than brains" club.

I like others would ask why fix it if it is not broken? Your car has already had a major engine out service done to it recently (within the last two yeas I believe). Maybe it is just for peace of mind so I will add my input, this is only my opinion and is not intended to start some type of flame war here.

I have recently gone through my 1984 Countach and based on that experience I believe you are looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000.00 dollars, I come up with this amount based on the following.

    Accepted base price to R & R the Eng/Trans -------------- $3,000.00
Reseal engine with gaskets, set cams and valve lash ------ $5,000.00
    Rebuild carbs --------------------------------------------$1,200.00
Caps, rotors, plugs, wires and tune -----------------------$1,000.00
Replace all belts and hose (AC, Oil lines fuel lines) ---------$5,000.00
    Fluid and filters ------------------------------------------ $500.00
Reseal trans includes no sychos or bearing just seals ------ $2,000.00
    New clutch disc ------------------------------------------ $600.00
Rebuild clutch slave cylinder ------------------------------ $250.00
    Rebuild pressure plate ------------------------------------ $500.00
Turn flywheel and balance assembly ----------------------- $200.00
Need a T/O bearing with that (try to fine one) -------------$3,900.00 (LOL)

I am sure there are people that can and will do things themselves but this is what you are looking at IMO if you take it to someone. Some may argue that some prices seem high, but try to find these components for a 25 plus year old car. I believe this is also a conservative estimate, take it to a dealer who will not warranty the job unless all OEM parts are used.

    Clutch Disc -------------------------- $670.00
    Pressure plate ----------------------- $4,100.00
    T/O bearing ------------------------- $3,900.00
    Slave cylinder ----------------------- $ 540.00

Hell thats over $9,200.00 in parts alone not including the $3,000.0 to R & R the Eng/Trans. Now get into the trans, I think you are going to replace some of those 25 year old synchro's. The hoses you going to have everything out of the way the perfect time to pull the twenty some feet of oil lines and the AC lines that are now 25 plus years old.

IMO, unless it broken do fix it. Sincerely Vic

The dealers think everyone is a "Rock Star". Brake pads and rotors for a '99 Diablo Roadster are over $8000 from a dealer.

    Good post Vic,

Do not forget these little items while the engine is out.

    1. Timing chain
    2. Rebuild distributors
    3. New motor mounts
    4. Fuel pumps
    5. Recharge A/C (R-12 cost $80 per LB)
    6. Rebuild water pump
    7. Rebuild starter and install heat barrier
    8. Pinion seal in diff
    9. Clean and paint engine compartment, engine, and trans
    10. A dozen other little things

Not all of these things 'have' to be done, but while the engine is out it's better to have it all done then having to pull it again in a couple of months because your starter crapped out on you, etc.

In addition, when you remove the heads you may find that the repairs were not done to a high standard in the cylinder where the piece of metal was flying around and pitting the piston and combustion chamber. Proper repairs could cost a lot more. A couple of years ago the first Canadian owner was selling that car so I spoke with the mechanic about the repairs. He sent me some photos of the damage, it wasn't pretty. He also told me that the owner did not spend the money to have the repairs done correctly. The second Canadian owner may have had the engine repaired correctly, I do not know. (Joe, do you have any info on this). Either way, I have had two Countach's and one thing I know for certain; no matter what you expect the cost to be, throw it out the window. You will find all sorts of little things that you were not expecting, and as I said in the beginning while the engine is out you might as well do it all.

As Vic said, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Drive and enjoy the s#@t out of it until it needs repairs.

    Good Luck,
    John

After Chad owned it I lost track of it....till Chad said it was available. I have faith that a competent guy (like 2NA) can repair the car correctly. I have brought some awful Miura engines back to good health. It takes time & money as they say, but sometimes it can be less money than you think.

Thanks for all the input guys.
Right now the car runs great but does need a new/rebuilt water pump. It also has a slight oil leak in the front of the engine. I would do it all myself but I am so busy with work I would get it all apart and then it would sit. It would end up taking me all summer.
As for a recent engine out on this car, I was not aware of one. It certainly runs wells BUT with the water pump leaking it must not have been a thorough job. Do you have any info on who did the engine work? I would love to talk to them about what may or may not have been done.
