Or perhaps I'm too much of a dork to check the oil properly! It seems as if every time I check the oil, it's low. I'm too nervous to actually top it off with as much oil as it seems to indicate, but I'm curious about one point.

The manual says to run the engine until it's at temperature, then TURN IT OFF and check the oil. Isn't this a dry sump system? I thought the oil had to be actively circulating to check it on a system like this. Our SLR and F430 both need to be running to check levels properly.

Plus a complaint: who in the world put the oil dipstick that far back in the engine compartment? Fortunately I'm over 6 feet tall, to it's not too hard to reach, but a shorter person would have a much harder time dealing with this.

Thanks for any input, as always.

I've found it sometimes hard to get an accurate read and the best thing to do is follow the manual exactly. I always check when oil is hot after a drive making sure car is level. If it says to check with engine off see if they tell you how long to wait before checking and follow that. I'd also speak to your service dept. as they may have learned the best practical way to check the oil level. I've also found that modern cars seem to burn very little oil.

The Murcielago should be checked with the oil HOT and within 5 minutes of shutting down the engine. It is a dry sump system.

For the regular Murcie, or the LP? Mine (LP) seems to be pretty clear about shutting it off first, then checking it. But that does seem odd for a dry sump system.

The manual's out in the car right now, but I may have to go dig up the exact verbage in a minute.

Better double check that, I think it should be off and is recommended to not be checked while running even though you are checking it on the low pressure side of the sump.

If the LP640 is anything like the Gallardo then consumption of oil is normal; the G manual says it can eat up a liter of oil for every 1000 kilometers as part of normal operations. I found I was well below the low mark after two track days in a weekend, stupid me for not checking it after the first day, but fortunately the car holds nearly 10 liters so a little low is not the end of the world. Regardless, the testing procedure is get the car up to operating temperature, rev to ~2000 rpm for 50 seconds, idle for 5, turn off and check within 60 seconds or your reading will be useless. I've got a very detailed howto on Gallardo oil check and top off at http://www.*********.com/showthread.php?t=13 Much of the info probably carries similarities to the LP640.

That's odd that it would be opposite the G and Murci.

In the G there isn't one, just a low pressure light, and you have to be very low on oil before you're that low on pressure. :)
