Luc Alphand, winner of the Dakar Rally back in 2006 and leader of his own Luc Alphand Aventures sportscar team, has been seriously injured during an accident in France.

Alphand is reported to have suffered spinal injuries in the accident, which occurred he was taking part in the Rand'Auvergne motorcycle rally during the course of the weekend.

The 43-year-old former downhill skier was due to undergo surgery on his injuries in Clermont Ferrand today [Monday].

"From what I understand Luc did not lose consciousness," Alphand's manager Philippe Poincioux is quoted by news agency AFP. "There is no danger of brain damage. We think that he fractured his spine.

"Mentally it's a big blow for him knowing that he will be unable to move for some time. He is really down even though he knows he has been lucky it was not worse. He is in great physical shape and that will help recovery."

    Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Hope for a speedy recovery for him. He's such a pleasant guy, always a smile on his face and time for photos with his fans at the LMS autograph sessions.

Actually he was able to walk around his hospital room one or two days ago and the doctors said that was a huge plus for his morale.

Luc Alphand is reported to be recovering well from the injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident over the course of the weekend.

The boss of the Luc Alphand Aventures team – and former winner of the Dakar Rally – sustained spinal injuries in the incident during the Rand'Auvergne event in his native France.

Having undergone surgery in hospital in Clermont Ferrand, Alphand is now reported to be recovering well although he will remain in hospital for more than a week before heading home to continue his recuperation.

“Having barely closed his eyes during the night, Luc is very tired but he's doing well,” long-time friend Christian Lavielle said. “This morning, in the presence of the doctors, he walked around his hospital room.

“He could see that all his limbs were functioning, which really lifted his morale. Now he must rest to regain his strength.”
