OK, I admit it. I didn't expect a great deal from him, but he was much, much worse than I could ever have imagined. Are there any positives to be gleaned from the last 2 races with Luca in the Ferrari? Yes! It has given the internet comedians some great material. Here is what I've found. Please add any you find or your own observations.

Then there's the nickname "Look at how Bad you are".

But Badoer gave F1 something that's made NASCAR so popular:
The chance for the average viewer to tell themselves,
"Heck, *I* could do better than that!".
    (Dream on, fans.)

So in the end, his "dream" becoming true has been the worst thing that could have happened to him...
I guess with Fisichella being reserve driver next year he has even lost his job ?

I feel sorry for the guy...

He's had a dream job for years, seen and been a part of automotive history, is probably financially set for life, and got to race (I use the term loosely) a Ferrari F1 in a GP at Spa. I'm not feeling too sorry for him.

The guy should turn these lemons into lemonade if I were him. Do some parity ads that spoof this ridiculous outcome or something?

If you're old enough to remember, they used to have those AMEX commercials where a somewhat-famous person would start out "You may not know my face, but..." and at the end their name would type out on the card. Perfect for Luca.

Everyone is making fun of Luca Badoer, but I don't think it's fair. People should not forget that Luca hasn't been competing in any kind of motorsport for 10 years. I'm racing go-karts every now and then and while I was quite fast on a single lap, my first race of a championship showed me that I had quite a few things to learn before I was able to actually win a race. So if a driver has covered 120,000 kilometres of testing he kind of forgets how it feels to race. How to approach a race. People shouldn't forget that driving Formula 1 in 1999 cannot be compared to driving Formula 1 in 2009. The cars behave so much different, the gaps between the teams has become closer over the years and Luca wasn't able to cover a lot of mileage with the all new F60. Back in the early 2000's when Michael Schumacher was enjoying a long winterbreak, Luca did much of the testing, so he got to know the car a lot better. With all the testing being limited nowadays the teams want their race drivers to cover the test mileage to make sure the race drivers can get familiar with their new car. So before judging Luca Badoer, people should think about his situation.

I hear you, but he should or could have said no, or blame Ferrari, or the FIA for the testing ban.

I was at Spa, directly in the middle of the long Kemmel straight, near the speed trap there. The cars are incredibly fast at that place, over 300km/h, and I quickly gave up trying to shoot pictures of them. They were just too fast for my camera and of hundreds of photos I took, 95% just ended up as blurry shapes of cars.
    With one exception:
The only driver I got crystal clear photographs of every time I pressed the trigger was Luca Badoer. No joke.

So Badoer tried to race and was really bad. So bad that he is probably done at Ferrari altogether. However it is the Ferrari team management who deserve the ongoing ridicule for having employed him as a test driver not to mention letting him race. They seem to have no clue whatsoever if judged by this debacle. Well, at least he IS Italian.

Would you ever say no to an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? The man has been dreaming for 30 years about landing a race seat at Ferrari. The only ones to blame are the FIA for the testing ban. If there was no or limited in season testing-ban, then the situation would be very different.

MS knew to back away, sore neck be damned. If the guy was smart he should have known that this would turn out to be a fiasco. Everyone else knew it. The guy has screwed whatever reputation he's had probably for ever.

It is absolutely absurd to read some of the posts here about Mr. Luca Badoer...He stepped up when called upon by the FERRARI higher ups, since they had no one else. His results should be completely blamed on the idiots at the FIA. Not only the "no testing" during the season is stupid, but I think it clearly creates an UNSAFE environment for everyone on the track.
I sincerely don't think that any of the people here criticizing him would do any better, especially once you are all removed from your electronically manipulated machines...yes that does include those that have 360's...
So, please chill out. Ferrari is going nowhere this year. The guy had some fun, lived his lifelong dream and now someone else can live that dream too...unfortunately that cannot be said about most of the people here nor in the rest of the world full of dreamers.

The one who needs to chill is you.

Of course nobody on here would beat BADoer in a F1 car. Does that mean we can't compare him to his colleagues?

Ferrari won't win the WDC or WCC title, but they are in a real fight for the #3 spot. This is not just about prestige, but also about real dollars coming from Bernie's golden pot. Wasting a seat on somebody who has no clue is flushing money down the drain.

Regarding the testing ban: BADoer wouldn't have been much faster in the F60 had he been allowed to test. He was never good at F1 ten years ago and getting older without racing experience didn't make him any better.

While it was nice that Ferrari gave him a chance at his dream, it was incomprehensible that they gave him a second chance when there are lots of more talented drivers out there who could have done a better job and are worthy of a chance.

Remember, on a very SHORT NOTICE....he was their best choice at the time. With time permitting, now they have Fisi. The real problem here AND the whole season has been the FIA...with no testing, what are these "TEST" drivers good for. I cannot understand that the FIA did not think that situations like these would come up...
Can you imagine if Ferrari or any other team that was fighting for a WCC had to feel like if this happened to them! It's like in the NBA or NHL not allowing in between game practices...I'm really surprised that non of you experts who seem to know more about F1 and are following F1 for a long time are not even remotely outraged by these draconian rules!

By the way, his real colleagues would be other test drivers from other teams, not guys that have been in 10 races this season. A real comparison for you guys is to put these other test drivers in their respective cars and then we can comare the rusults:)

In that case how do you explain, that even rookies like Alguersuari and Grosjean, who had a lot less seat time in a F1 were faster than BADoer?

If I'm not mistaken, they were both in GP2 and were racing competitively before they were called up to F1. Neither of the drivers from Renault nor Toro Roso were let go on a moments notice. Their replacements were long secured before those guys were let go.
A fair comparison that I can make for you is with tennis. Even a tennis player like Rafael Nadal, (not sure if you follow tennis) who was #1 before he was out injured, needs real match play time to become competivie at the top. You can practice all you want, nothing ever replaces seat time in car racing or match play in tennis in a real competitive situation.
It's one thing to go fast on a track with no one on it, it's a totally different thing when you are trying to pass others or are defending a position.
Also, the gap between cars in terms of lap times has narrowed significantly over the last decade.

So basically what you are saying is that BADoer was woefully unprepared. The wrong choice for the job at hand. I agree with that.

Which makes Ferrari's decision to use his services for two races even more strange while there are plenty of folks out there who meet all your criteria.
