    So being the 3rd owner of this wonderful machine and reading conversations about when is the right time or really how long can you wait. I now personally have the answers. Last belt service was done by a local shop in 2005 @ 11,300 miles. After buying the car 3 months ago @ 17,800 miles I know have just over 19K on the clock and I could hear pulley's squealing so I managed expectations and below is the result.

    motor was pulled on Monday and is still "under the knife" I'll post pictures as the process happens.

    As you can see it looks like one of the tensioners froze and started melting the belt.

    Also that is rust on the end of the water pump, the water pump was changed in 2005.

    What is the best ways' to identify the need for a new Waterpump?

    Spin the water pump, does it make noise?
    Did it leak from the weep hole?
    If yes, replace it.

    Normal car water pump: replace when coolant starts dripping out or it starts making noise, but that's because the water pump is usually fairly accessible.
    Ferrari 348/355 water pump: if any doubts replace or rebuild, 'cause you don't want to drop the engine again just for that.

    I did replace a water pump on the 355 by dropping the gas tank, recently. It was not real fun, or easy, but doable.

    You can't do a 348 water pump without dropping the engine, despite what the "experts" might say.

    change the waterpump. it runs on t-belt. failed WP = engine death. do not cheap out here.

    The OP has a 348; you're information does not help him in this regard (which is what I believe Tim was alluding to)

    They are not knock offs. It looks like the shaft is the inner part of the bearing.

    Update with pictures

    I've taken the time up clean and paint some of the inner wheel panels, 19K miles I beat i took off 10 pounds of gunk. Damn the person who posted this the first time and yes, I have all 4 peices from the rear wheel well done.

    i used brake cleaner to scour the gunk, 2 cans dupli-color primer filler, 2 cans of Krylon Flat black and 2 cans of Krylon clear. they came out amazing and I encourage everyone to do it.

    A quick update on the progress, the SKF tensioner bearings were fine but are being replaced with Hill Engineering. what looks like damage or melting to the outside of the belt was actually caused buy the waterpump bearing. it was still working but was starting to slip and the waterpump is also being replaced.

    sorry for the bad picture but I'm also replacing the pulley/bearing supporting the alternator, that was making noise as well.

    Thought on me using this AC safe the spray and clean both water radiators and also the oil cooler now that I have the engine out? I've used it to good effect on my AC compressor to clear out the organic material
