At the risk of boring the paint off the walls -- I am trying to finalize my decision on lug nuts for the Porsche 928S4 (yes, I know this is F-chat...no difference in the question). In agonizing over color (chrome, black, etc.), I see that I can get aluminum ones or steel ones. Presumably aluminum is softer but lighter. Should I stay away from aluminum for any particular reason, and if I do get them, is it recommended to get one of those "soft" lug wrench attachments, with the plastic interior liner?? And will I still be able to torque it properly??

Any thoughts, once you've awoken from my boring question, would be appreciated.

If you are worried about a few ounces then yes get aluminum. I would get steel cause there is a less chance of you stripping the threads. Then you can paint those black and get light up valve stems

    Hey Peter,

These from McGards are as light as aluminum but really strong. You dont want to twist em off with all that torque!

Will you be at FOW for F1?

Peter, the 928 came stock with aluminum lugs so I would stick with them. Just remember, don't let anyone take the wheels off using an air impact wrench.

As for the soft socket, just slip a plastic bag over the lug nut when you take take them off and on.

    Nice tip.

I never would have thought of that. Now, I'm gonna go stick some baggies in my tools drawer with the sockets!!!

I think either Griots or California car cover company sell special sockets with soft rubber insides for removing lugs from exotics... I just saw them in one of those catalogs a few days ago. i would stick with the same type material that came with the car.
