I purchased a used factory Lusso subwoofer enclosure. The factory speaker is an 8" driver but it has to be the cheapest speaker of this size I have ever seen. Fortunately, a JL Audio 8W1 8" subwoofer (which I have sold hundreds of for my 360/430/458/488/F8/Cali enclosures) fits perfectly into this enclosure. The adapter plate we'll design will probably be made of some type of metal (steel, aluminum).

Is that factory one the one from the “upgraded” JBL system?

Does the upgraded subwoofer sound a lot different than factory?

That's the right question... How do we know this is the weakest link? If the amplifier is saturating for example, no need to swap the subwoofer.

Remember, a speaker is a dumb, round thing that moves how you tell it to move to the best of its ability. A great amplifier with a crappy speaker will sound better than a crappy amplifier with a great speaker.
No one has said that this speaker swap was going to be some sort of miracle cure for the ailing factory stereo. Most of the people who will be buying this subwoofer upgrade will also be buying upgrade kits for the other speakers in the car, as well as a high-quality, high-powered amplifier. You can just look at the difference between the factory sub and the aftermarket sub and tell that the JL driver is going to respond way better to a high-powered amp, which equates to better sound and more sound pressure, as part of a high-quality aftermarket system.
The first of the adapter plates will be shipped two days from now.

Here is the adapter plate with the inserts installed. My CAD guy still has the enclosure. However, he's moving back to the Silicon Valley (from Toronto) and should be here in a couple of days. More pictures on the way.
