Which the Bentley thread getting me thinking about the car industry today, what do you see happening? It seems Aston Martin and Bentley want to downmarket to the more "affordable" segment, with the other car markers such as Benz, BMW going below the $30k market, will we see these car makers get the stragety rear-end? It seems that the jeweler, Tiffany & Co, did the same thing, try to mix affluency and mass, and it is not working for them well (am I right?). What are your thoughts?

The lure of the mass market is obvious: there's more of it. Look at toyota vs. Aston or even Ferrari. Maser has become a big pain in the arse for them financially.

It's unique company that can sell 10,000 $100k cars. Porsche is the closest, IMO, of all.

IMO, a lot of manufacturers are going to lose sight of the roots that got them there in the first place. As a result, some will be forever relegated to the "masses," fewer still with any success. This will either open new opportunities for manufacturers of high-end vehicles, or force the older ones to embrace their heritage.

True. Do you think that we'll see a shakeout in a few years, when the boomers start to hit to retirement?

I'd rather see that than badge engineering.

Same here. I think the luxury market will shakeup, with boomers starting to "tighen" their pursestrings.

The idea is to get the hooks in people young like VW/acura has done and just keep them upgrading every five years.
