The newest BMW's are too muted/isolated. Too heavy. I prefer the 1M E82.

    We'll see 1M vs M2 tests soon, I'm sure.

But BMW slowly managed to Buick-ize itself. They need to take a look at Mercedes for design and performance inspiration.

Why would they not offer a manual transmission? This kind of car needs it.

Because it costs a fortune to certify them and then no one buys them. People only claim to love stick shift in virtual world, not real one

Did you guys even read the article?

"These figures hide the bigger news, however: A six-speed manual transmission is also available. "

I realize its getting a stick.

but most manufacturers stopped offering them because expensive to certify both when only 10% actually order one

I like it, looks like an e46 m3 on steroids. I'd buy this over the m4.

Yes I read it. I was simply wondering why they would even consider not offering a manual transmission. 95spiderman, I have heard that almost 40% of current M cars sold in the US come with manual transmissions, and considering waaaaaaay more people in Europe drive manuals, I was surprised to see its availability in remote question.

I drove the new M3 and M4 and hated them. Heavy, isolated, lack of grunt down low, uneven power delivery, etc. I'm sure they are exciting when driven hard, but they sure didn't appeal to me. Of course I didn't like the new California T either. And, come to think of it, I really dislike my wife's X3 as well (tranny tries to start in 2nd gear, but it will very unsmoothly downshift to first if you call for more acceleration--if it had been my car I would have dumped it after a month). The M2 sounded promising as it was supposedly coming in much lighter than the M4. New updated weight figure (that I read somewhere this week) suggest it is pretty close to M4 weight. Unless they done some steering and turbo calibration magic, I suspect it will share the plusses and minuses of the current M4.

It's supposed to be 2-300 lbs less than the m4 and same weight as the 1M. Decently high redline as well.

I agree. I don't think they've fully escaped the Bangle era, and the M235i I looked at a few weeks back (was car shopping) was bigger than my e46 3 coupe -- way too big for what's supposed to be the spiritual heir to the original BMW 2002.

Mercedes has improved recently. Maybe winning all those F1 races is helping.
