I have an area of new curb rash on the front stock 18" wheel (03 Cab). Pulled the wheel off last night and used some jewelry polishing wheels on a rechargable Dremel tool (should get a nod as tool of the year) to smooth everything out. Loss of metal is minimal and I don't think it needs to be built up. No issues with rim bending, etc. In the spirit of DIY, I have the following questions:

    1) I have 3 visibile surfaces--raw aluminum, a black colored paint (primer?), and the metalic dark chrome. What do I need to do as a pre-paint prep--I have cleaned the area with acetone, but do I need to use TSP or something else to etch the raw aluminum?

    2) Do I need to prime the raw aluminum, and if so, any thoughts on what I should use?

    3) Because this happened today, and I didn't call my local BMW parts dept, and I'll go nuts waiting until Monday, does BMW (or someone) sell wheel touch up paint? Any part numbers and or leads would be appreciated.

***Posted this on Roadfly.com, and a poster there said that the wheels were powder coated--does this affect the repair process?

Yes, I know I could pay someone to do this. I know my way around an airbrush, and if the primer I use can be built up to a reasonable thickness I think I can get things close. Given that I could 1) easily hit another curb, 2) have an off track excursion during to upcoming season, or 3) croak before it makes a difference, I am willing to settle for good (as opposed to great).

    Thanks for the help

Sounds like work to me. I just paid a 100 per rim to get it done to our M3. Good luck.
