    Don't know if anybody here is Mac knowledgable but I've got a sudden issue I can't seem to fix: when I restart (or start from off) the machine keeps freezing after about 20 secs. The spinning gear eventually freezes and that's it. It will then sometimes then restart itself and get stuck in this loop.

    I tried to safe boot but it still won't get past the startup apple screen with the spinning gear that freezes.

    Mac Pro tower dual quad core Intel Xeon, OS 10.6.8, 16 GB RAM.
    Any help appreciated.

    Have you tried booting from the install dvd and running disk utility?

    Not a bad idea. However, I'd firstly try to bring it up in "safe mode";

    Then run disk utility.

    Good luck, let us know how it goes,

    Ugh, I just dealt with this on one of my daughter's computers.

    Unless you have recently backed up the system, if you have another Mac around, use a firewire (if both macs have that port) cable to connect the two, put the bad mac into target mode (hold down the T while booting) and copy your important data to the second computer before doing anything else.

    After you have the data you need, run the disk utility.

    I suspect a failing hard drive, the apple store can run tests to let you know if the drive is beginning to fail.

    Good luck, expect to spend a few hours on this.
