    Hey,

I recently downloaded the latest updates for OSX and the new Safari 4.0 browser. On my old G4 it works great - Fast and reliable.

However, on my MacBook Pro I can load about 5-10 pages before it locks up, hard...... Checking the Apple support site it seems many people are having the same problem. There are a few "fixes" suggested, but non of 'em have worked for me.

So, for now at least, I've just installed Firefox on the MBP and all is again well with my web browsing.

Just a heads up in case anyone else sees the "problem".

    Cheers,
    Ian

Been working fine for me on my Macbook Aluminum running 10.5.7.

I went from Safari 4 Beta to Safari 4 via Software Update -- perhaps that made a difference.

Ian - I'd recommend getting a PC and just avoiding the whole Safari problem. Sorry, had to throw that in there. :D

All kidding aside, I wonder if this is a similar issue that the G/F was having with her macbook pro and browser issues. She took it back to an Apple store and they worked on it for quite some time before they found that there were "preference conflicts" that would cause the browsers (happened to Safari and FF) to just "hang". She tells me the store tech basically did an archive and install of the OS again and that seems to have resolved her issue. I realize that's not much detailed help here but wondering if it's a similar type conflict and fix.... They couldn't pinpoint the conflict though so that's where the issue falls short.

I'm sure the fixes you've seen probably covered that but if not, give that a try. Geez, ever think a PC guy would offer help on a Mac? :D

I know a few PC users who prefer Safari.

Thanks to all for the comments - It really is quite an "interesting" issue - As noted, it runs beautifully on my old G4 which (obviously) shares the same wireless network. I've tried all of the suggested fixes that are bouncing around on the Apple discussion boards and which seem to work for some people without any change. This includes disabling the Google "fraudulent site" check and rebuilding the various "lookup" indexes etc.

However, I'm actually starting to quite like Firefox so that's a pretty good workround for me! I suspect Apple will release a "mysterious" update fairly soon that'll fix everything without revealing exactly "what changed" - I'll report back after said update........

    Cheers,
    Ian

Figured you'd catch the joke & appreciate the humor :)

Glad the FF thing worked out in the meantime. Hopefully they'll be quick with the corrective fix.

    Cheers!

Have you tried repairing disk permissions? I would have the beta lock up on startup from time to time but no problems once it gets loaded.

I actually have an Intel Mac Book that I intentionally wiped the drive and installed Linux (Ubuntu distro) just to mess
with all my Mac buddies :) And just to add to the joke, I am using the Mac wallpaper, a Linux dock that looks and works
just like Mac, and have the Mac 'theme skin' installed just to keep 'em guessing :) Bwaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha!

I really don't have anything against Mac - it's pretty and works well and all that. But I'm too much of a
gear head and Mac just doesn't do it for me. I might buy an Air just for fun though - I do like
    the profile and the look.

    ;)

Don't panic!..... As you can see from the above, most people aren't seeing the problem.

Have you installed it? - If so, I guess it's working for you.... It *appears* to affect a small subset of machines - Specifically, early Intel based boxes. The G4 & G5's and late model Intels seem to be OK. [This is all speculation based on extensive reading btw.] I haven't tried, but also suspect it may not happen if you're hard wired (rather than wireless) to your router.

No big deal - Firefox is working great and I'm going to forget about it until Apple releases an update - Again, I suspect this will provide a mysterious fix (!) and all will be well with the world again...... Whether I'll stick with FF remains to be seen - The more I use it the more I'm getting to like it.

Maranelloboy - Thanks, but yep, permission fixing was one of the first things I did - Always is when things go sideways! Followed by removing the relevant plists and various other "fixes" suggested on the Apple support forums. I even (briefly) poked at the system logs but I'm not as "diligent" as I once was, particularly given the simple alternative.

    Cheers,
    Ian

+1 You could always put Linux on it as well! The latest price cuts also make it a bit more attractive....

So it is the early Intel machines that are affected? I just checked and I'm still running the Beta on the first Intel iMac, might have to wait for a new version.

I'm not sure - Don't hold me to that! - But, as I said, it does *appear* that's the case. [Although, it's not a consistent thing of course....]

It would be a great test if you'd give it a try - The first response above said he'd gone from the Beta to the release version without any problems, but not sure what he's running it on..... If you make a backup of the beta version (just move it out of the way) I'd be interested in what you find...... Just don't yell at me if it breaks! ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Just did the update and it looks fine, maybe a problem with plug-ins?
