http://www.apple.com/macbookair/#ad I have to say, even though I don't need a second laptop, I almost want one just because it looks so cool... If I had a desktop computer, I will be all over this to use as my portable.
Keep in mind the battery cannot be removed, no built in CD ROM for watching movies, you will need to buy the Superdrive for that. If someone just needs a laptop on the go & price is no issue, this might be the computer for them. I wouldn't suggest a college student making the plunge for one of these $1800 or the pocketbook crippling $3100 version. I could see some Soccer mom type with deep pockets getting one of these to surf the web at her local Starbucks or someone that demands a thin, low weight computer that's always on the go. As for myself I'm not going to take the leap to the Air, I'm still happy with my MacBook Pro, besides I'm not a fan of small screens.
the battery cant be removed but they will replace it for $129 for free lol Its a great looking computer but only has like 1.6 memory. The price wont come down for a longggggg time. They have to pay R&D for awhile. iTunes movie rentals was another big story at the keynote Antony
1.6 GHz Core2 Duo CPU. 2 GB of RAM which is baseline for OS/X. Main draw to this PC...LIGHT! 3 pounds. Another draw is 5 hours of batteries. Drawbacks? Battery replacement is send in only, $129. Battery dies and you've got a brick in your carry-on. Dumb dumb dumb. Also can't swap out batteries. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Another minus is the stupid chiclet fakking keyboard. You want to learn how to type like William Shatner acts? This. IS. YOUR. PRO. Duct. KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKAAAAAAAAAAAHN!
only problem is that its too expensive. I'd rather get a Vaio TZ (i think that's it) ultraportable and it even has a bunch of USB ports, amazing display, and DVD BURNER BUILT IN. It looks very nice though. right now, I need a new router to replace our aging Linksys. Was looking at the Airport Extreme, but the Time capsule, which is a NAS, that works with time machine, and has a wifi router built-in, will get my money.
I still cannot view the keynote report, the current stream connection from Apple is horrible. I'll have to wait until I can download it.
You know, everything Apple has been doing lately has really taken all the wind out of my sails from trying their products. This is just another reason for me to stick with what I have and know. They are eventually going to price their products out of the reach of their biggest and long time user base. Now every product they make you have to send in to replace something as simple as a battery.
I suspect this won't be that big... Years ago I had a Sony Vaio. About the same size. The small size was irritating after a while. I immediately had to get a seperate CD rom player, as without it the computer wasn't ver useful. The keyboard was a pain. If its anything like the current apple keyboard, half the letters don't show when you speed type... An innovation like the ipod its not...
Im a huge Apple fan but the Air leaves me disinterested. I like the innovation with the touchpad but thats about it. And it is way too expensive. It will sell well though...theres lots of people who have to have the newest thing on the block.
People who buy this will be either A) Do serious traveling, or B) Have Desktop at home and want a Laptop for portable. I think there is market for it.
I have an ultraportable laptop now and will not go back to 15 or 17" laptops ... and I like the MacBook Air a lot. I dunno, I like the wireless features a lot. Have a desktop to use for hungry applications, have multiple drives and just access what you need from the MacBook Air. Been waiting on such a product for a while now.
wrong, as long as you have another computer within the vicinity, all you have to do is use a program called remote disc, put the disk into that computer, may it be a mac or pc, and the air uses that computers disc drive wirelessly... tell me that isnt seriously cool. You can always buy an external battery too... Heres the real point of the macbook air, its not to be a best selling product, its to set up the future gens of laptops to come. Apple has always come up with the new revolutionary products, their apple portable was one that set the trend of laptops in the 90's, there ibooks set the trend for the 2000's. The Air is going to be how we see future laptops developed, and yes there performance will get better....
I just don't this will go over to well, 1 USB, No DVD (A must for me when flying), built-in battery, Price, Low Speed CPU, and it can't be all that strong. Anything that thin is going to have some problems. I would much rather get a MacBook Pro.
With an 80gb hard drive i'm sure you could put some movies on your Mac ... Or order them off iTunes I do agree that their products are quite pricey. I sell computers for a living (Macs and PCs) and let me tell you that the price of Macs isnt stopping people from getting them. We are consistently sold out of Macbooks, and Macbook pros while PCs are stocked all the time. I am sure this will sell very well.
The problem is not the design, great device, for what purpose it serves, thin, light, ultra portable, for routine work, the problem is the price, if it had be introduced at 899 or 999 everyone would be raving on it.
For me the problem isn't really the price. Albeit a little too pricey imo. It's the fact that I can't go out and buy and install my own battery for $50-$75. I have to send it in, so there's a fee, then pay apple $130 for a new battery, or whatever, then wait until I get it back. It's a bunch of crap. This idea that they have to handle everything if something breaks, then charge an inflated amount on top of it is a deal breaker for me.
My luck isn't usually that good. lol Although I do talk a lot of ****, I know I'll give Apple a try in the future. I always like tinkering with new "technologies" (OS) I'm not familiar with.
