I’ve seen a couple of these on the interwebs, and I wonder if they were done by the dealer or by random owners? Anyone know? Anyone have more pics?

They’re machined, as I said. The effect is achieved by painting (or powder coating) the entire rim and then running the top surface under a lathe.

"Machined" could mean almost anything (e.g. built from scratch). It would have been better to explain it as you did above. It doesn't seem to make much sense to put it on a lathe after painting (unless the lathe is just polishing, which you could do without a lathe). You might get more info if you can post the links where you saw them on the internet.

Seems like a lot of trouble machining a new wheel that looks exactly like a factory wheel minus the black paint.

Well… factory wheels are matte silver not black, and what’s left is raw aluminum not silver paint. The raw aluminum can be further polished or brushed. A clear cost over the whole wheel will then be applied. I’m not sure what was done to the wheels in question, but I can assure you that they will look quite different to factory wheels when viewed side by side.

Dunk the rims in b12 to strip them, media blast them, tape the face, powder coat the non taped parts black, bake it at 240 degrees till it flows out, pull the tape, clear coat the whole wheel, bake at 400 for 15 min once rim is up to temp so about 40 min total. Result is shiny raw aluminum with gloss black behind the spokes as the top picture. Any powder coat shop can do that, it’s a common thing.

only thing different is that first picture looks like it was plated not raw aluminum. Same process just plate it first.

You could be right about machining but I do t think so.

I love this site. So much fun.

ANYWAY… if anyone’s seen other pics of wheels finished like this I’d love to see them. I’m not interested in arguing about how these particular wheels were created.

The process on that wheel is just as Lucas explained. I just did this with the wheels on my C8 Vette. Powder coated the color (dark silver metallic with darker silver barrels), machined the lip natural and then a tinted clear final coat. Came out great.

Duh. Liking these is directly proportional to your proximity to the Jersey shore. :)

I hope to have them mounted tomorrow.

Complications from the penis reduction surgery, I’m sure. Be well.
