I think without Selleck, the movie flops. With him, it will do well, 308 or not. But to me, the 308 is very important. To many other people, maybe not.
I have to agree with the last post 100% Birdman! I'm just hoping Tom will accept the terms and do the movie. All the old "die hards" would show up for it, which alone would make the movie money! Pete
Note that from Selleck's appearance on 'Las Vegas' over the last year or so that he looks, ahem, 'beefier' than in the old days...not so sure how 'hot to the ladies' he'd look these days whilst taking a morning swim in the ocean. Magnum is really a 30's age type role, and I think most viewers would be somewhat shocked to see the old cast doing a current movie...too bad, cuz it would be nice to have an actual movie out. Offhand, can't think of anyone out there who could capture the pizzazz of the 'Magnum' role these days.
So Tom's a little heavier. So am I.... Probably most of the people who watched the show are a little heavier. The audience would expect him to be older and heavier. Tom would have progressed just as in normal life. Without Tom and the rest of the original crew, the movie won't go. Just my opinion, but Tom and the others made the show. The show itself was never that good. Just the accessories like the cast, and the 308. It's a classic. Tom's a classic, and any other way is disrespectful and wrong.... PK
I have to chime in here. I was getting gas the other day and a 30ish guy came over to me and said "Magnum PI" !!!, then we shot the breeze and he didn't even care that the car was slower than he thought...he was impressed. and as I left he pointed again "Magnum PI". I get the thumbs up alot, and also from a distance away. I say..supercharge the 308 and put Tom in the car
For the movie to be a hit with the 30-40 somethings, it needs to have a 308. The Miami Vice re-make was very average becasue it didn't have the music or feel of a Maimi vice show.
I think the Miami Vice movie was really really a big piece of junk. Miami Vice is a 80's theme and not making it in the right era was the first thing that was going to make it awkward. Imagine a movie remake of Scarface set in the present time, it wouldn't work. I do hope to see a 308GTS in many shots during the movie including a long and sick car chase.
Don Johnson could totally have made that movie. And, by the way, no director can make a paddle shifter look cool. Hell, watching Chips work the clutch on the Kawasaki was better than the lame paddle shifts in the Miami Vice remake. Whatever Ferrari they use in a Magnum movie just needs to have a stick in it if you ask me. dave
Unfortunately, I think that too much time has passed. Yeah, some old hardcore fans like us would go see the movie, but we're only a small percentage. Studios won't make a movie for a small niche group like us. They will only do it if there are big bucks to be made.
OK Boys, I'll lend (rent?) my car for the movie ! I'll even lower my seat and push the momo back up so Mr. Selleck can fit in it! Done deal, let me know. ;-)
There's a hell of a lot of people our age that remember Magnum and even if they aren't huge fans of the show or Ferrari nuts, would probably go see the movie just for old time's sake IF it had the original cast. New cast? Forget it...younger people don't know the show so there is no attraction there, and people who watched the show in the '80s won't be interested in a "re-invention." This was exactly what happened with Miami Vice. You just can't recast Crockett and Tubbs! You can't recast Magnum PI, man. Either use Tom Selleck or forgettaboudit! Hey Hollywood....I know you are reading this...be creative and do a remake with the ORIGINAL CAST!! I volunteer to be the Ferrari consultant. And I volunteer Dr. Tommy to be the story consultant, because I KNOW he knows the story better than anyone! Birdman
I agree -- Mann's reinterpretation was just another mediocre cop flick. 90 percent of the original was style and music, all of which was ignored in the movie.
If Tom does the movie-It will do well. If the whole cast does the movie--It will do very well. People from our generation haven't forgotten the "good old days". Now, .... Just follow me on this. What has really gotten better since the late 70's and early 80's? The 308 is a prime example. My motorcycles are a prime example--1982 CX500 Turbo Fuel injected and turobcharged. It's awesome. I don't own a 308 yet so I can't go on and on bragging about it! Pay hasn't gotten better in comparison to the actual cost of living... Our kids don't have any better childhood in my opinion (just more guns, violence and teen pregnancy) I remember the "good old days".... Anybody else want to add to this? Pete
I completely disagree with this statement. The TV series had a reinforcing aspect to it, in that viewers like us were watching it week in and week out. Imagine just watching the TV pilot. It certainly didn't contain all the "style and music" to which you refer. Try watching the movie a couple of times in HD and get back to me. I would like the film to be the first in a series, but I doubt the two stars will be easy for Mann to pin down.
What about Jeffery Donovan from the series Burn Notice? After watching the series i'm convinced he could be beliveable as Magnum. That way you'd have someone for the younger audiences and Tom Selleck for the older guys. Jeffery could play the son in the scenario of Selleck as father to a new Magnum. We are all forgetting about his daughter Lily......that was perhaps the most emotional vein in the whole series. She could grow up to be anything given her ethnic roots and international childhood. She could be hot, smart, exotic, is Magnum's daughter, has memories of her (beautiful) Mom etc. Keep that link and go from there and you hit not only the male. but also the female moviegoers. I say he lives for Lily and doesn't ever have a son or another woman in his life. See what she has become as the possibilities are endless. The only real option for a sequel IMHO. And we need Carol of course.
+1 on Jeffrey Donovan as Magnum's son with a role for Tom S. in the show but older. Donovan doesn't need any lip hair. Their sense of humor and "narration style" is pretty close to identical. Robb
Was in a Starbucks in Hollywood last week (acutally West Hollywood, but does it matter? Can't a straight guy get a coffee in West Hollywood?) A guy beside me said he was working on a script. I didn't get details, but he has no sponsor, so he is just fishing. As for cast . . . Donovan is not a great actor, but I'll take him. Forget Carol--she was the most annoying person on the show. Wish Tanaka had not died. Higgins must make an appearance. Magnum needs a 550 Barchetta--STICK SHIFT was the only option. Wife got me first 3 seasons for Christmas--guess what I do each night before bed?
I second all that you said. IMO this re-boot doesn't have to go the way of:the duke boys, the new a-team, starsky and hutch. All of these movies took away from what the originals were. I know the a-team isn't out yet but....my money is on them ruining it. I think that Hollywood has seriously dumbed down everything and all the re-makes thus far have been way over the top with how retarded they can be. Its like MAD magazine having all the movie rights and then going overboard. Magnum was in its day one of the original drama/comedy's- the show was simple and yet very good for what it was. I think that casting Tom-capitalizing on his age and seeing how he developed and grew a bit wiser, would bring tons to the new movie. As for the car-Robin had all the best- so it would seem fitting that tom would pry his bigger ass into a 458. The people who would want to see the remake are the ones who would really enjoy Tom being in the drivers seat. Lets face it- the younger generation doesn't know the show and if its not spoon fed to them they won't get it.
