Main & Big End Bearing Question.

    Has anyone ever heard of not replacing the main and big end bearings on a 90K mile engine that is completely torn down for a rebuild? I am having an Alfa engine rebuilt and the mechanic that is doing the job told me that he checked the main bearings and that they are fine and within spec so there is no need to replace them. The rod bearings checked out OK but he is replacing those at my request. From what I understand about lower end bearings is that rod bearings tend to fail quicker and have a shorter life than the mains bearings do. At any rate I believe the mechanic and he as good rep on Ferrari engine rebuilds as well. However I figure while one has got the engine torn completely down this far that that all the lower end bearings should be replaced for if for nothing else other than "good measure".

    Any thoughts and advice on this?

    Manual + micrometer + plastigage + visual inspection, should tell you what needs to be done. I don't really know if origianl equipment Alfa bearings are still readily available, but I suppose it's possible that good, old Alfa bearings are preferable to new, junky Chinese bearings. Your mechanic has nothing to gain by doing a substandard job, but I'm sure he'll do it however you want it done. I hope you get many more miles and years out of the Alfa!

    If the crank isn't being refinished or ground to a size then you could reuse the bearings.

    Good bit of work to fit the tolerances properly.
