I can't seem to get a figure on ownership of 355 or 360 .What are the cost's,how much would I save if I had none factory mechanic do the work , if good shop can be found? How much more $ could I expect with paddles vs 6sp to spend if problem ? I know this is alot to ask of you fellas but as I've said before I'm not a rich guy ,or should I be looking at a 328 gtb?Figure over a 10 year span with a major service involved . would the fact that a none dealer performed the work hurt the resale ?

Most of those questions have been addressed in the technical section time & again.

Synopsis....Pay now or pay 'n pay later. It's best to buy the best example of the car you can because repairs will be less up front. A PPI is a must. for the 308/328 figure the buy price + $10K to sort out any issues. about $3K/year maintenance (it's an old car). Parts are expensive. Labor isn't so bad. Find a good mechanic who knows the model.

    Sorry, I can't speak to 360's.

It's been said time and time before...

"If you can't answer, you're obviously clueless".

ANYWAY, it really comes down to a few factors:

    - How hard are you gonna drive it?

    - How hard has it been driven?

    - How was previous maintenance performed?

I've had months with the F355 that cost $0 and drove 1,000 miles. I've had months with 0 miles of driving and $5k of "maintenance". The challenge with the older cars is the cost of the maintenance relative to the value of the car. If you pick up a $60 or $70k F355 and you need to do a major + valve guides... you're paying upwards of 10% of the value of the car. And you STILL have to be gentle with it.

The more "moderne" cars have some maintenance costs, but most of the stuff that breaks is under warranty. You don't have that luxury with the older models and when something goes, it's time, money for parts, and the right man for the job.

What kind of driving are you looking to do? Weekend cruises to the beach? Occasional driving with friends? Hitting the club with the Mrs.? What kind of car are you hoping to get? Spyder? Coupe?

Here's my recommendation, after having done it a few different ways:

    - Get as "moderne" a car as you can bear to afford.

    - Find a car that's been ONLY serviced by a dealer. And buy the car from THAT dealer. Yes, there will be a premium but there's a reason: They'll stand by the work AND the parts.

    - Do NOT purchase a warranty from anyone BUT a dealer.

    - When you need something that the dealer cannot perform.

Oh, one other thing to consider: If you're angling to be buying new cars in the next few years, begin building that dealer relationship today. No matter what you might read on the Internet, cars are in short supply. If you've got goals and dreams of picking up new metal, begin today and make every car, every service and every dollar count.

wow...take it easy. That wasn't a stab at you or anyone, and that PM you sent me was uncalled for, which brings me to another point of Ferrari ownership....maturity.....probably more important then being financially prepared to own one. "If you have to ask, you can't afford one" isn't my made up saying, its a very common one used by many people, and one that many people in this community agree upon. I'm sorry if it sounded like I was singling you out, but just know that I wasn't, and that you need to take it down a notch. Ferrari's break down mysteriously, and cost an arm and a leg to fix, that's why you must have a substantial income to be ready for whatever may happen next. You cannot save up JUST enough for one and hope that nothing will happen. That is all we're trying to say.

His reaction is justified. He came in, asked a question. You gave him a smart ass answer for no reason. You probably should have said nothing.

When Vik and I first found fchat, all we wanted to know was about 355 ownership costs. How to plan. What's predictable. What's the worst case. What to look for. You get the idea.

I don't recall ANYONE giving me, or Vik, a smarmy answer like that. And we were just as green with as few posts.

What you probably should have said is. "Welcome to the forum. I'm not currently a Ferrari owner, so I have no real first hand knowledge to share. But, you know what they say: 'if you have to ask...' There are a few folks on the board who can help. Hopefully, they'll chime in with some info. Oh, and you should fill out your profile so folks can learn a little more about you."

Instead what you wrote pissed off a new member AND made the actual Ferrari owners who had something useful to say less inclined to post in a thread where people are pissed off 5 posts in to it.

    Just my $0.02

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go to the 300ZX forum to act like a punk...

Sorry, I didn't think I was acting like a "punk". Didn't think you'd be the type of person to overreact like that, but you are right Emil, I should have left it up to the people that could intelligently answer the question to post. I guess I got my forums mixed up, the other ones I'm on don't take so kindly to people asking questions that can be answered with the search button. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, and I truely did not try to act like a punk.

haha wow this is pretty heaty, i think the whole "if you have to ask..." thing is sort of true, but its basicly a joke on ferrari. ferrari's are EXTREMELY sensitive cars. my friends dad owned a 1999 360 modena with teh F1 flappy paddle gear box. from what i was told....and wat i saw...
every like 3 years and or x number miles (cant remember the exact numbers) you need to bring the car to someone who can change the rollers and the pulleys. which is something like 10 grand.

than of course you have your engine check light (which you will become very accustomed to because it will always be on because it comes on if you so much as fart a wrong tone in the car) and dont think u can go to sears and buy that machine that lets you turn it off....ohhhh noo this is a ferrari my friend, they have "especial" diagnostics tools that only they make and cost an obscene amount of money and only few mechanics have outside the ferrari circle of dealers. and make no mistake those mechanics make thier money back very quickly by charging insane amounts of money.

Than of course you have your "screwing around" costs for doing burn outs and such. a new clutch in the f1 tranny will cost you like 10 grand to put in when it all comes together.

the tires arent that bad, i think a nice set of pilot sport cups puts you back like 250 a piece or soemthing like that

These numbers are rough, but trust me there is no way you are going to get a definite number on any of this, because these types of cars break ALL the FREAKIN time and the people who can fix them charge alot. dont get me wrong, i love ferrari's and i would love to own 1 one day. except they burn a hole in your pocket, idc if ur a millionare or not, 10,000 bucks is a ALOT of money to be spending on a car. but if it is ones passion, and you arent comin up wiht the cash out of your retirement fund, or your kids college fund, than whatever "boys and thier toys" as my mother would say. im not trying to shed a negative light on your idea im just giving you the cold and hard facts. be ready to spend. and i think that was wat was trying to be said with the "if you have to ask..." thing.

my friends and i have a joke that whenver seomthing breaks on a car such as a ferrari, automatically assume its gonna be at least 1000 bucks...and a a rule of thumb, its probably right most the time

Ummm, one does not "fart" in a Ferrari. If one were to, then clearly then engine light should come on because I seriously doubt you could fart in tune with that exhilarating exhaust note. Just like a person singing off-key in a choir...throw the bum out! 'nuff said
