i was wondering if the cost of the 348 is "very expensive", like a 355. How is it compared to the 355? about the same? way lower? way higher? etc. From what ive heard is that the 355 is an expensive car to maintain and a 328 is probably the cheapest. Im looking for my first ferrari, but don't want it to put a giant hole when it comes to maintance.

Also, is the 348 a "reliable ferrari"?

Thanks everyone. Hope to hear some great information.

That's more than I paid for the engine out-cam belts service of my BB512i at FoA and it did include new tensioner bearings and a water pump rebuild as well as having the entire engine, transaxle.plenums ect..repainted...You must negotiate with the dealer on these big services. My negotiated deal with FoA was a fixed price of $3k for labor plus parts...

Sorry I forgot to list them they were changed also. All vacuum lines and hoses were changed on the front of the engine. Just about everything on the front of the engine that would require the engine to come out or be a PITA to change with the engine in was changed along with the regular 30K items

I would imagine they should be just about the same labor wise. The 30K service kits listed on FCHAT Sponsor Ricambi America's website are range from 1450 to 1700 on the 355 and 1200 to 1600 on the 348. Note these kits do not include front crank seals or water pumps

The costs are comparable, but keep in mind that the 355 is more complex. The F355 has driver-adjustable shocks...which means that you've got an extra suspension ECU, 4 extra electric adjustment motors, adjustable shocks, etc.

The 355 also has power seats, so you've got extra motors there, too.

The F355 Spider has a power top, so you've got a top ECU, an extra motor, and hydraulics.

Likewise, the 355 has power steering...so you've got an extra pump, extra pulley, more hydraulic lines, etc.

And the F355 motor has 5 valves per cylinder instead of the 348's 4 valves per cylinder (which translates into different parts and labor costs when you are doing a top end job).

The F355 F1 cars have an entirely different transmission that has extraordinary maintenance costs (an F1 tranny pump system can run $15,000 just for the parts, not labor, to replace).

The 355 has different exhaust manifolds...the OEM manifolds are good for no more than 30,000 miles. You **will** be paying $2,500 or more to replace those every 30,000 miles.

The 355 also has different valve guides (pre-mid-1998 models) which are apparently only good for some 25,000 miles.

What you are getting in the 355 is more refinement and more power and more luxury. This is not for free.

The 348 is a vastly less complex machine.

Thanks, No Doubt, that explains it in a nutshell!

Sounds like the service on the 348 was right in the ballpark, especially because ALL the proper work was done.

Frank, we all know you get a quantity discount! <grin>

Im looking for my first ferrari, but don't want it to put a giant hole when it comes to maintance.

Then do not buy a Ferrari.....before I sold my 328 because of the insane prices being charged I would put aside $2,000-$2,500 per year for maintance and 6 months of summer only insurance. You always have to have cash for that unexpected repair.

Eugenio's site is also helpful - routine costs for the F355 are higher but, as has been posted, you're getting the performance of a newer car.

Well, yes - I made the decision that $2500/year for maintenance on a 328 was the price of admission for driving something special. I also decided that 355 costs were outside my comfort zone, whereas the 328 looked very do-able.

Obviously anyone buying a Ferrari needs to surf this site and get an idea of the stories and bills. If you're going to rip your hair out when the water pump goes bad, the Porsche dealer is just down the street.

That was especially true prior to the days of online information. Back when Ferrari information was hoarded, it was the Ferrari Owner who had to pay to play.

However, the current state of information online has changed the cost equation for people willing to do their own research and some/all of their own wrenching.

Instead of $800 for one 348 tensioner and $850 for the other, now you can find both sold for $400 in aftermarket upgrades (superior seals/bearings), for instance.

For another example, I took apart my $3,500 A/C ecu, swabbed all of its solder points with Stabilant 22a solution, and fixed my fan up button problem as well as my clock display problem for $50 rather than $3,500.

Enormous difference. Scan online and you'll learn that Ferrari of Dallas sells OEM parts for substantially less than Ferrari of Atlanta, but that Ferrari of Atlanta gives more free tech help over the phone.

So the Ferrari world is a different place today. Costs are substantially lower now for those willing to do more than hand the keys and their checkbook to the closest dealer.

Your criticism of past pricing, however, is valid...and still holds true for those F-car owners who aren't on-line or aren't bothering with research.

Oh man. I'm framing those kind words. I **know** you by your Ferrari reputation, so getting an attaboy from you to a guy like me who only has a little under a year of Ferrari ownership is way, way cool!

All proper work was done and I should have many trouble free miles ahead. Now if I can only get those dang mouse belts woking so can stop giving the seatbelt tutorial to everyone who rides in the car I will be happy.
