I'd love to do a failure analysis on this...if anyone has a failed prop shaft, I'll offer to do the analysis and post results here. But like has been stated already...it's likely there's no single defect in the shaft, it's more a condition of excessive torsional stress from rough unbalanced running. I'm no prop shaft expert, but I'd expect these don't just have one hardness...more likely a softer core and a hard surface for wear resistance (maybe induction hardened surface). Shoot me a PM if you are willing to part with a fractured one...

What is shocking more than the fact that the shaft broke is how it is Twisted. I totally agree that running on 4 cylinders could cause stresses and vibrations which could easily break that shaft but the twisting makes me think long-term abuse and aggressive driving and then it finally failed. Would love to see an analysis on it

I experienced a broken shaft and assumed that it was the result of bucking when trying to leave a stop etc. Don't know where you found a genuine Ferrari shaft for $2600. My search was more like $6k. They make "better ones " in Germany and England for $2600 and I bought a suit of related parts from the England place since they were a little easier for me to deal with. I was told that a worn spline in the hub was the greatest cause for shaft breakage so I bought the spline go-no go gage, a hub, new shaft etc. I have machine shop friends and we changed it all out.
Oh, I had the clutch disc relined at the same time but should have replaced the throw out bearing as well.
All this gave me the opportunity to repack the CV joints as well.
    That's my story.

Get a Hill Engineering for the throw out bearing and you will never experience the cracked housing the oem part experiences....been there, done that. Daniel at Ricambi America has them

Tim at Walkersport in The UK can supply uprated 355 propeller shafts for a very competitive price, he was telling me he has seen these fail in the paddock on the challenge cars when they were simply crawling along at a snails pace. Its the first thing they swap out now.
