Okay so Dan just picked up my car this morning with enclosed trailer, great guy from meeting him for first time. Asked him about the question of Majors on thiese cars..From a when standpoint he told me every 5 years contrary to 3 years by Ferrari in his expert opinion unless of course there is a problem like leaks etc..

As far as what in a Major He told me that the controversy ove just replacingr belts as most do is that they are made out of Kevlar and almost never break but the tensioners do need to be done so the major to him is more about inspection and replacement of common leak problems from cam seals. He told me he feels this is most important along with fluids, spark plugs, belts and tensioners etc..but obviously once belts are removed they are stretched out so new ones are installed.. They will have car up on lift for me to see everything they find before repairs are commnced so thats nice to be a part of process.. stay tuned

You're better off changing the gearbox oil and engine coolant annually, IMHO.

The transmission oil gets worked hard and the cost of swapping the fluid out is minimal so it is cheap insurance in my eyes.

The coolant breaks down over time and you really don't want the water/oil heat exchanger to fail. Again, cheap insurance (I prefer to mix the anitfreeze with battery top up water).

Belts should be renewed every 3 years (again IMHO). The vibrations given off by the flat plane crank configuration are quite destructive so the tensioners and bearings take a real hammering.

In short, I'm surprised a proffesional workshop would recommend stretching out a major service.

I was talking about the BELTS not the other things within a major service..of course annual complete fluid changes must and are done every year..I was talking about the major service here and so was Dan when we spoke..

It's interesting that Ferrari maintained a 5 year interval for cam belt replacement along with the mileage target for many years. I have maintained my TR over the last 17 years with the 5 year target; no issues. My 05 360 spider has been under the 3 year target since new. I enjoy taking up to 8500 periodically, and enjoy the extra peace of mind knowing the belts, tensioners & other items are up to the task. No one I've ever talked to that has lost a timing belt on a Ferrari engine has enjoyed that experience!!
