I purchassed a 85 308 a few months back with out service records, The car has 52,000 miles on it. CarFax has an entry saying 'service', but I have no idea what or where.

I have been picking up fluids and a few parts to do a "Major" service. What else should I do besides whats on the list?

    Cam belts
    "V" Belts
    Change spark plugs
    Cooling Hoses, radiator and heater
    Brake Fluid
    Trans Axle Fluid
    Engine Oil & Filter
    Repackfront wheel bearings,
    Air Filter if necessary

What do I do with the rear bearings? do CV Joints get serviced?
What about distributor rotor, cap and wires? only if bad?

Man, we gotta find you some books!

There's a chart in there, that has all the stuff every 3,000 miles, majors are at 15,000.

Your brother was looking? Or try ************ or the guy in Coral Gables, FL, FerrariLiterature, IIRC or something like that.

I could copy the one from my 1977 to give you an idea but the injected cars have different needs......

If you register at the Factory Owners site you can download it as a .pdf file....

Wires can go bad but thankfully the rotor and caps are long lasting, as they are $$$$$..

The driveshaft joints are sealed in rubber accordian boots, like the old Caddy Eldorado and Olds Toronado, but inspect for tears that will sling out all the grease.

All fluids and filters, air filter may be a judgement call.
Tensioner bearings with the timing belts.
Get some Gates green stripe and replace all the coolant hoses.
The heater hose from the rear head ages worst near the motor and it is a pain to replace the whole thing. Depending on its condition they often can be spliced near the fuel tank.
Replace the fuel pump feed hose.
Ck the cheap a** plug wires with an ohm meter 500-2000 depending on length.
Valve adjustment. Your going to like that one. And replace the cam seals while you are there.

That will keep you busy for a while. Come back when you have that done.

Something I haven't quite figured out from searching... can the cams stay in place while replacing the seals on both ends? That is, if you are just doing the valve adjustment, seals, and o-rings does the cam have to come out?

I hear that there is a water hose somewhere in the middle top, maybe under the intake....that one too.

By The Way, what a cam seal?

There are 2 in the valley of the motor.

Where the cams poke out the front of the heads there is an oil seal. Actually that seal is almost trouble free, it is the great big O ring on the cam seal housing that seals the housing to the head and valve cover that always leaks.

    Hmmm...

I recently walked through the valley of the shadow of the cams and my '78 had 3 of them big ass coolant hoses.

78 and 85 are different cars.

On a 78 the cam seals can be replaced with the cams in and the valve covers on.

    Hey Brian,

I saw a picture of a 550 Barchetta on e-bay, looks like a pretty neat car.
Its has two things going for it, it's a manual trans with a clutch, and a convertable.

Do I need to know anything else about the car?

    What the difference between a 550, a 575 and a Superamerica?

    Your cheep brother

550 Barchetta was special edition of 550.....they lowered the height of the windshield, IIRC..soft fabric top..

575 came later with a bigger engine.

SuperAmerica has the flipover glass top, photochromatic tinting.....

You're not talking "cheap" anymore, on any of those V12s...LOL!

    Special edition?

How much do the Barchetta sell for once they are broken in, say 30,000 to 50,000 miles?

They are fairly rare, I noticed one the other day for sale....Ron Tonkin maybe?

I did not note the ask price...like the SuperAmerica, "if you have to ask 'how much' you cannot afford it!" in my case.....

    I am learning with Ferrari,

It's not the cost of the car, it's the cost of maintaining it

    You have learned quickly grasshopper!

That's what keeps me living in "old 308 land"...plus it's really IMO what a Ferrari is supposed to be about.......multiple carbs, rough edges.......scares the neighborhood when I crank it up.........

I'd lose all that if I got a new one! LOL!
