I have done some research here on the board but I would like a little more detail on the subject. I own an 86 Testarossa with just over 27000 miles.

Firstly, what exactly is done during this major service?

What are some other things I can do to the car while the engine is out (preventive maintenance), like gaskets and such?

How many hours would it take a tech to pull the engine?

And finally, what does this cost? Labor, parts, any extras...

This is my first major service since I have owned the car and I am jumping on this right away because a new clutch will be going in fairly quickly.

    Thank you for your time.

The service varies slightly from shop to shop and is very dependant on the service history of the car and what it needs. As an example most at this point need rehosing of the fuel and cooling system if it has not already been done. Many need new injection nozzles. Both have an affect on parts and labor bills.

Unless you already have a mechanic, interview a few.

Ask around and get some recomendations for shops from other owners and go to those shops. Get them to tell you exactly what they will do to your car and how much it will be. Bear in mind though that there will almost always be additional items found once the car gets taken apart, so be prepared for that.
