i would imagine this has been discussed before...i searched for a thread but couldn't find it. sorry in advance. if my car had a major service in 2008 and has been driven 3km since - does it need a major immediately? if the belts look ok - its the tensioners i need to worry about? thank you
from my own experience I would say: no, but no guarantee. of cours it needs an oil change and brake fluid change. the timing belts I would change all 40k miles or latest after 9 years, what ever will come first. this is only my personal opinion because of my more than 35 years experience
I agree with Turbo-Joe but this has allways been an big discussion here, all the time ... what are you afraid for ?
I agree. I would change all fluids, including sump & trans oil/filter, brake fluid, radiator power flush & refill, check and replace tires and all rubber parts due to wear and/or age. Timing belts should be changed with full service at 10 years or 50k miles
FWIW, I purchased a TR a couple of years ago with the most impressive service history I had ever seen by the best shop I know of. It had been 5 years and maybe 1200 miles since the last no expense spared major. The car ran fine and had no signs of "needing" a major based on seat of the pants. In fact I was even told it could wait until the end of the driving season. Something told me not to. When they opened up the car we found the inner water pump bearing was a few hundred miles away from a catastrophic failure and the tensioner bearings were on their way out. Belts looked great. I say this to say.... Drive it at your own risk. I know TRs that go ten years between majors and have heard of some that don't make it to 5. Based on my personal experience, I would tell you better safe than sorry, especially if your car, like mine, had not been driven much over the last few years.
