I've been home being a bum the last 3 or 4 days due to a shoulder injury working out so I'm watching lots of TV and losing my mind in the process. So I see this deal on CNN where a Dr has opened her own little ebay store selling clothes. I thought all those late night things on TV selling ways to make money on ebay were scams but apparently not because she is making 125K a year doing it part time between being a Dr and raising 2 kids. So this intrigues me. A part time job you can make 125K at is nothing to sneeze at. I'm sure you could triple or quadruple that with full time and a few employees. I'm always looking for different business ideas. Anyone have any tips on how to get started? Are any of those kits any good on late night TV? Any websites that are any good?

I wouldn't spend money on any of those infomercial products teaching you how to make money online. Instead, I'd subscribe for $15 to this forum so you can have access to the business and investments section. Lots of good stuff there and you can ask specific questions about business.. and you don't break any posting rules :)

This would be a good topic for the subscribed section...you should join.

I make a couple grand per month on EBay without much effort. Im sure I could bump it to $5k month if I had the time.

I have a friend whose wife buys clothing and accessories in the Los Angeles wholesale fashion district and resells on EBay. She claims she does about $60k year

I think you need to be a really self starter/self motivated person to make it work. If you need instructions on how to do it its probably not for you.

Basically find undervalued purchases of whatever you are interested in, as thats what you will be knowledgable about , and resell at a higher price point. I know about collectible toys so thats what I buy and sell.

my cousin and her husband would buy the "leftovers" from garage and estate sales (i.e. the crap that didn't sell), put it on ebay, and make a pretty ridiculous profit off it, percentage-wise. no idea how much total $$ they made, or if they even still do it (had a kid since then).

If you're creative and independent I'm sure you can still do well on ebay, but don't expect someone else's method or model to work for you.

and yes, you need to pony up the $15 and subscribe! :D

I did this a couple of years ago & did ok but with the rising ebay fees & shipping costs it's difficult to make a decent profit. It has crossed my mind about starting up again but if look at various sellers sales & the product demand have been down.

Thanks guys. I'm hearing all around eBay fees are just too high now. Oh well. And I have been subscribed in the past. This just isn't the high end type of business discussed in there so I thought I would ask here first.

Hey, don't give up yet. The biggest Ebay scam are the shipping fees. I have a good friend whose wife owned a nationally-known retail shipping business. Except for the holidays, the majority of her business came from Ebayers. She had an arrangement with most of her Ebay clients where she created two receipts, one with actual shipping, which the buyer never saw, and a second one which had the shipping fees inflated by 50%. This strategy works great with small high frequency purchases where the numbers can be really rung up (excuse the pun). Reminds of the "second slap chop and graty are free - just pay shipping and handling.

I used to do quite a bit of ebay sales; made some pocket change.
The two things that became a problem for me were the constant increases with the shipping companies and ebay themselves.
Most of my problem is with ebay.... they have become quite greedy and these days are really pushing toward the 'ebay store' model. This is crowding out the private seller.

I haven't sold anything on ebay in a few years; don't see that changing either.
