Dump the original air-box & go for a single K&N filter or similar.

It WON'T really make you go faster but it sure will sound like it & you'll think that you are!

Ditto for exhaust mods, but more expensive.

True. After many years of my research and studying, my opinion is that the only thing is to keep it well maintained and drive it.

Supercharging and turbocharging are out there, but very pricey.

Sell it and buy a 348. If it is an 89 328, you probably will make money on the deal.

If you put in a test pipe ($300 or I've got a used one for $200) or a HyperFlow cat ($750) in place of the oem catalytic converter, you'll feel a difference immediately.

Nick Forzani offered me this advice on my 328....

Hi Wes, It depends on the condition of the engine. How are your valves &
guides etc? If your engine were in excellent condition, I would just
replace the whole engine management system, as it’s a piece of junk in
today's standards. Approx price for complete management system including
fuel injectors, fuel rail ECU coil packs ignition wires, trigger wheel
    $4500.00

You will have to have a local machinist bore your intake runners for new
injectors & build an extension between the throttle body & the manifold.
Please call me for more info. Its the best bang for the buck & then you
can do more upgrades latter on it should net you 40 hp if you can find a
good tuner who understand air & fuel & timing. Regards, Nick

Gotta agree with F1Ace and Nick - ditch the Botch Jetronic and go aftermarket Electronic injection. Properly set up, you'll get more grunt, better mileage, and it will run cleaner. To reduce costs, you can do as much of the work yourself as possible.

If you want to be really cheap (ok - REALLY REALLY cheap) you could always obtain 2 sets of injectors, sensors, ECUs etc from a Japanese 4 cyl engine that is roughly similar in power output/rpm but by half.

For example - Toyota 4AGE engine is a 4cyl 1600 that puts out about 150 hp at 7500rpm. The 328 is essentially 2 of these put together. With a little creativity, you should be able to use all the electronics from 2 of these to run the 328 as if it were 2 4cyl engines with a common crank. It won't be perfect, but it would be better than stock. If you are able to do all the work yourself, then it should be possible for under $1000. Of course, once you do this, the infrastructure is there to later add on a fully programmable ECU to extract maximum performance - when/if finances permit. It also makes adding some form of forced induction easier. Of course, then there is the 4AGZE supercharged Toyota engine......

Hi Solid car, what is your budget, or what is the threshold level that you would consider to be allot of money? We could probably give you some suggestions on this thread if we had some more info.

Mark, The best ECU is the one that makes you feel comfortable. Personally, I'd go with the ultra cheap Toyota or whatever option, OR, something that is completely controllable. I would forget about ECUs that have only a hand piece with a few limited controls, such as the microtech. Most of the race guys I know use Motec. If you need advice on what is best and don't want any BS, and someone who is NOT trying to sell you something, PM me. I know a good guy in Leppington who does a lot of work for the V8 race guys.
