I am attending watchmaking school in the fall of 2014 and want to use my time, until then, to create a watch movement. I bought a relatively cheap Chinese made flying tourbillon movement in order to dissect and become familiar with the movement; as well as buying "Watchmaking" authored by George Daniels. I'm looking for any advice in regards to making a watch movement or even modifying an existing movement.
Also, when it comes to watch parts (screws, gears, pallots, escapements, etc.) Where can I find them? Thank you!

    Hi, Peter.

    What school are you attending?

I should point out that a tourbillon is very complicated. You should try opening, cleaning and oiling a much more simple movement first.

I like Time Zone's Watch School

It's a learn at your own pace program.

    Good luck!

I'm disassembling a Valjioux 7750 chronograph movement right now. I'm going to be stubborn and create my first watch as a tourbillon. I purchased "Watchmaking" authored by George Daniels as a step-by-step guide. I have been skimming TimeZone's watchmaking school and it's not as user friendly as I'd like. I suppose I should participate in an actual watchmakers forum.

Wait until you begin school-you don't want to pick up any bad habits or techniques between now and then. Starting off with a tourbillion is lunacy in my view. I've known watchmakers with decades of experience who would hack up a tourbillion.

A good primer is the Bulova School of Watchmaking book. Bulova grads are known for their hairspring skills.
