I went to the Houston auto show yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the Malibu. Yeah, it is an appliance, but it looks like Chevy finally figured out how to do an interior. I don't have a clue how they drive (like an appliance I would suspect). But Chevy looks like it might have finally built a Camry killer.

A few problems even if it is just as good.

    1. Momentum. Toyota has it with the Camry. Why should a HAPPY repeater change?

    2. Resale/depreciation. Which do you think will do better?

    3. Likelihood of 200,000 trouble free miles. Guess.

There's a long comparison in Fri wsj bet the Malibu/Accord and the MaBu doesn't come out too badly...Sabatini sez the Mabu is better and the Honda has dropped,,,but he sez one little thing about depreciation[he ack's the diff of the 2] and not a word about reliability, which in my decision on this type of vehicle would be huge not far off the 1st question''do you like it'.
Good for gm to get some things rite[but how do they shank the feel of the steering wheel and seats?he comments on these] but man they're so far down that lonesome hiway how'r they ever gonna get back?

Detroit has gotten much better over the last few years....

One thing that a lot of people forget is that with a Honda/Toyota/Mazda you are likely going to pay a lot closer to list price than with the Chevy, and the list price for the Chevy is going to be a lot lower to start with. There are generally so many discounts and special deals that if you compared depreciation on the actual "out the door" price that was paid it wouldn't be nearly as bad a comparison. You can expect, in that price range to get another $1-2k off of list at the very least. A Chevy is going to be worse, in terms of depreciation percentage, but it probably isn't all that different in pure dollars over time. If the car is as good as they say it is, then they may do well with it. GM cars come with a 100k mile warranty too, so that if you are keeping the car for a long time that also plays into the life cycle cost factor..... The last time I shopped for a new car for my wife we were really put off by the Hondas. All of them were "packed" with "dealer options" like paint protection, tape stripes, rubber mats and other things that allowed them to jack the price up that the out the door price of the car was absurd, compared with what you could buy in terms of domestic SUV's. One hundred thousand trouble free miles later that has proven to be a pretty good decision....

All of these cars are darn good right now, buy what you like and want to enjoy....

i drive a 2000 malibu, dad drives an 05 malibu, and i looked at the new malibu. i love the new interior, lots of gadgets and bells and whistles, but, i'm not going to get one til they come out with a bluetooth system in it, and drop the price a little bit. my dad got his fully loaded, a demo car, for around 15k, i wouldn't mind getting a demo or slightly used, but 30k for the one outfitted the way i like is a little high.

Buddy of mine just bought a LT with the V6 and 6 speed auto. I took it for a short drive, drove DAMN NICE. His was $24,500 out the door. For the money, IMO it can't be beat. The interior was just as nice as my 38K Infiniti.

Sat in a Malibu, liked it alot. Better then the Camry, havent seen the new Accord yet in person. If your talking about white goods, the Camry is the definition of a white good. In all the comparions I have read, the Camry has come in last versus the new Malibu and Accord. The Accord has the better engine it seems.
