What were the other arcade games of the 1980's?

    Remember Joust?
Car game, California Dreamin (or something like it).

    Defender!

    What else?

OOOh. I seem to remember skateboards were becomin "in." They were still plastic/plexiglass, and small... :).

And who here didn't own a velcro wallet?

I know I am delusional here, but I could swear the summers back then were hotter/longer/ and better than now ;).

Nerf footballs came out, so did whiffle balls/bats. Toys R Us was selling the u-control Cox airplanes. Did anyone EVER get one of them to fly longer than one revolution before disentegrating it?

Remember "Speed Racers." Little match box cars you pulled backwards to stretch a spring mechanism, then they zoomed across your floor?

Remember the RC cars? The grasshopper. The Hornet. The Fox. Remember the first radio controlled helicopters? The Cricket?

Everyone had a "Trapper" velcro notebook holder for school....

The brick style cell phone came out - man I wanted one...

Who sings the song "It was the summer of '69. Those were the best days, of my life..."

Mattel made the white one, they started reselling them as retro games a year or so back. Check Walmart, they have them. The light brownish football game was Colleco's version and improved upon Mattel as you could pass the ball.

All this music being listed and yet no one is really listing any Metal.

Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Motley Crew

    Did anyone mention the Police?

    Grey Market cars. :)

Movies: The road warrior, 3 O'Clock High

Fraggle Rock, Garbage Pail Kids, and He-Man and She-Ra, and does anyone remember Star Blazers? 3:30 was always booked for that.

Birth of MTV. Did you know all they used do was play videos?

    Spuds Mackenzie

Union JackT-Shirt (no sleeves), Bundeswehr Tank Top, Zogs Sex Wax T-Shirts, shoulder pads, tab collars, skinny ties, skinny belts (girls), spiked belts, suspenders, swatch watches (and swatch guards), bandana tied around the wrist or ankle, Spiked high heels (the higher the better) and what I miss the most, thigh highs and stockings! Or if the skirts were real short I had a GF who would wear hose/tights with an access panel built in. And any color was available and probably worn. Going out with bare legs was just not done.

    Boy I miss the 80s...

As far as I'm concerned, skinny ties are the only ties. Who wants a giant hunk of cloth around their neck that's as wide as a beaver's tail? Looks like something Fred Flintstone would wear. Skinny; wide; it's all just a cycle to keep the tie companies in business.

Space Shuttle disaster...we all remember where we were when we first heard about it (McGill University Music library)...or saw it on live TV.
Our first VHS machine (850$ and 30 pounds light)...Dad still has it!!!!
My first car (1979 Mazda RX-7)...
...and my second car (1980 Fiat Spider, that I kept for 15 years).

    Summer of '69

I got my first real six-string
    Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it till my fingers bled
It was the summer of '69

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit and Jody got married
I shoulda known we'd never get far

Oh when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Ya - I'd always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life

    Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenin's down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you

    Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me that you'd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Back in the summer of '69

    Man we were killin' time
    We were young and restless
    We needed to unwind
I guess nothin' can last forever - forever, no

And now the times are changin'
Look at everything that's come and gone
Sometimes when I play that old six-string
I think about ya wonder what went wrong

    Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me it would last forever
Oh the way you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Back in the summer of '69

Coleco's Electronic Quarterback - the first handheld football game that allowed passing, one upping Mattel's Electronic Football.

In 1980 or 1981 Mattel released Electronic Football 2 in a green case. This version of the Mattel game allowed passing and also allowed the receiver/rusher to run backwards, one upping Coleco's Electronic Quarterback.

Tomy's Digital Derby kept me occupied for hours.

I was also a big fan of Parker Brothers Merlin game.

It's funny to look back at the things that were so important to you when you were a kid. Sadder still, that I remember so many of those things in such detail.

Electronic/computer games? Never played them, BUT I do remember being at Brands Hatch in October of ‘83, during the Formula Ford Festival, and watching Ayrton Senna and Chico Serra seriously stuck into a game of Space Invaders, no quarter given. At the time Serra was in F1 and Senna had just clinched the British F3 championship and was looking for a job....

The ‘80s were just great. If all you can take with you is memories, you might as well have a few. Here’s one of mine:
