I have no idea if your city will compensate you (can't fight city hall, ya know), but hitting a short tree or a tall one, or in this case a tall manhole cover, is the same for collision insurance coverage.

That being said, get her checked out before you go reporting it. Could be as simple as a few screws on your shift linkage.

    In Chicago:

    1) You have to prove that the city knew of the road fault, and had been officially notified to repair it, yet did not.
    2) You have to prove that your car was in fact damaged on that particular hole, in the time frame between when the city was notified and when the pothole repair actually occurred.
    3) The city will review your application, and by the time your 2 year old graduates college, come to a decision. During this time the pothole will be fixed, and any prior notification/complaints, lost.

    Call your insurance company...

I would at least complain. There used to be a large unmarked dip in Virginia St, the main drag through the middle of Reno. Most cars had no problem with it, except for one unlucky TR. He hit it, bottoming his front spoiler and damaging it, from what I could see. Less than two weeks later the dip was filled in. I don't know if he was compensated or not, but at least the problem was fixed.
