Hello everyone. I'm wondering if there are any aftermarket suppliers of Carbon Fiber or fiberglass hoods for the Maranello. I'm specifically looking for the 550 or the 575, but any help to a retailer or distributor would be great. If not that, a used hood, or even a ferarri used parts supplier (even a junk yard??) that might have a hood. This is for a personal project I am working on. Thanks! -Bill
You will have an impossible time finding a CF hood, but used hoods are everywhere. Try Lyle Tanner @ Ferrari Parts Exchange. --Dan
Thanks for the responses guys. Its nice to come across a board with exceptionally helpful members. I found the parts exchange you mentioned but they want $8500 for one... (http://www.ferraripartsexchange.com/bodyparts.htm) But perhaps one that is damaged is floating around, because as long as the center section is intact, I'm fine. Maybe your contact will be better able to help me out. Again, thank you. I actually only need access to the hood to take a mold. I happen to be a CF manufacturer and can have them made with the mold if anyone is interested in some weight reduction. I did a Mitsubishi GTO hood, and the weight savings were from 65 to 16 pounds. Not bad for a relatively inexpensive modification. This inquiry is actually about another type of car, but if you're interested and think the guys may want it, I can help you out. Email me if you like. -Bill [email protected]
Bill, I know of a damaged hood that had the front left side bent, but the "center section" is intact. It may still be at the body shop, I will find out. The hoods are not cheap. They are ~13k new. --Dan
With risk of sounding dumb: it seems to me that 13k for a new hood already is pretty expensive, but is having to manufacture a CF one so much more?
Bobafett, Thank you for your help, I'd be very interested to hear what the price may be. It was also suggested I rent one for the day. I think the price is $450 from the Rodeo Drive Hertz for a day... might be the cheapest way. Janus, If I had a hood to mold, i could produce a CF version that would retail at about $500.00-$800.00 and be perfect, depending on the functionality of the scoop (I can make it so that the airvent drops right on the air aintake or leave the airflow directly to the motor).
Bill, Renting one will definetly be the cheapest option. How can a hood be $800? I'd buy 5 at that price! As for the air scoop - don't mess with the functionality. Have the scoop pass air into the intakes as it is currently designed. There's no need for air in the engine compartment. --Dan
I'm really hoping a situation will pop up where a body shop will let me borrow one for a day for a couple hundred. Anyone in Los Angeles on this board? If I could get someone to let me use a hood, I'd probably be willing to give them a CF one for free or deeeeeply discounted. The hood costs so little in comparison because the materials are much cheaper, and honestly, a Ferrari hood is just a little overpriced in the first place. (that said, I drive a car based on the Ferarri... no hate at all!) I havent had a chance to look under the hood, so i wasnt aware of the air intake venting... if there is something to mate up to, then thats where it would go. On may of the cars I have done, there are no existing vents, so buyers are happy to find out that we have made the vent drop cold air right on the air intake filter. edit: bobafett, your sig quote is awesome! lol.
AFAIK it's a ram-scoop (or whatever they're called) used for compressing air into the intake at higher speeds. The functionality would need to be as it is, or you (may) change the engine performance.
FYI, I am currently planning a full CF package for 550's that will include a new fascia/bumper, hood, skirts, rear valence and decklid. Valence USA will be manufacturing it. From what I know, parts tend to get damaged when throwing moulds. Also, we tend to appreciate people selling things to pay for sponsorship.
Thats fine Ryan, if you read the thread you'll probably realize I am trying to get ahold of a hood for a mold intended for another vehicle entirely. The notion that I could make a actually 550 hood is just a side conversation, and this really isnt intended to be an advertisement at all. My apoligies if it came off that way. The only reason right now to make a 550 hood is it would actually be cheaper for me than renting the whole car! Yes, you can damage a part when taking a mold. We'd actually take a different type of mold of a painted hood, then build our actual mold off of that one, so as not to damage it. But that is our major concern about borrowing a hood, or renting the car. I'd much rather use a damaged part. I took a look at your package, its nice. Not too far off the stock styling, but much more aggressive. I like it. Edit: Ryan, you have a PM
