There is now just one 550 (at $109,800.) and one 575M (at $119,900.) offered on eBay. Why oh why didn't I load up and stockpile a dozen or so of these cars last winter?

Yes, same thing is happening in Europe, no more on eBay and very few on the other websites.

There has been a dramatic drop in the number of offered cars.

....exactly Seth, that's what happens in Europe as well. I visited during one of the most important classic car fairs in Stuttgart last weekend some of the internationally well known dealers - no 550/575 available, they are all looking for these cars... Prices have reached for good cars already the region of 80-120.000 €.

    Kind regards,

    Jürgen

Banks aren't paying interest for your money, Ferraris are appreciating by the week... People tend to stick with them, causing a sharp drop in cars popping up for sale. I've never seen dozens of 575 for sale at one point for instance, but here in Portugal regarding 355s, this trend is clearly picking up. It wasn't unusual to see 10 cars for sale at one point and now there's 2 out of the blue.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Owners who want to sell are probably looking for more money due to dramatically rising prices. This bubble will burst. Sell now when the selling is good. It wont last.

In HK, 550s have caught up to and sometimes exceeded 575s in (asking) pricing, with fewer 550s on the market relative to the 575s.

Actual transaction values...who knows. And it's a long way from saying that 550s are now collectors cars, however.

But, it does make the man maths easier when I explain to my wife that I'm spending another $7k in upgrades this summer. Shock mount mods! New stereo! Refinish the wheels! Redo the parcel shelf! New exhaust! "Honey, it's an appreciating asset..."

There has been no 550s on the open market in Australia for 6 months. 575 are down to one red car that has been there for a long time

That's it! The market is being fuelled by men who can finally justify their purchase of a Ferrari to their wives. That's the best explanation I have heard. Lots of married men craving Ferraris. Limited number of Ferraris. Suddenly there's a justification. Boom! And it's not a bubble, as long as all the men retain a) wives and b) desire for Ferraris. Man economics, perfect.

I can't see any of these cars as bubble's - they are so rare, And u can still buy one for the price of a SUV, abiet a nice SUV.

If this bubble pops - all the other luxury car manufactures will go out of business. If a nice 550 is 110k, that is DIRT cheap compared to a new MB SL or MB550.

If the economy keeps chugging along and we inflate our way out of the Financial mess our GOV's have gotten us in (we always have) our cars are going to surprise many people in regards to value.

Maranellos aren't disappearing at least on my corner of the world. 575s are harder to find, which isn't news: in terms of probability, there were roughly +50% 550s made than 575s, and I relate productions numbers directly to collectability (not the only factor affecting collectability, and this is a personal note, don't know if the market is with me), so it's always more likely to find 550s than 575s.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

I always pay close attention to what Darius writes exactly because of this: he understands the various, complex aspects commanding appreciation and desirability regarding these cars, and parallel idiosyncrasies relating to premium asking prices. He analyses the causes, not the effects.

And I wholeheartedly agree: there isn't a bubble. Appreciation doesn't equal bubbles. Unsustained appreciation does, and I see no sign of that when it comes to these cars.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Prices will certainly go up for the foreseeable future due to one fact; I am not selling! :)

The bubble (if there is a bubble) will burst about a month before I decide to sell. Good news is, that could be a long time.

In my humble opinion, the long run will show the 3 pedal 550's will bring more than a comparable 2 pedal 575.

    Hi all,

they did build 100.000 Porsche 993 and they go up like crazy. So what should happen to the last analog dinosaurus Maranello 550??? Of course there is some dealer speculation, but the cars will definitely go up in value and they are wonderful cars, btw.

Reynolds- I doubt it. Incidentally, there are no 2002 550s and yours fits in with CY 2000 serial numbers

Taz - time will tell. My prediction wasn't meant as a slam on 575's. I certainly wouldn't bet the farm on my prediction either. Just an opinion. BTW - I know my car is an '00. Why did you say 2002. If I typed that somewhere it was a typo.
