    Hello,

So, closing in (11 months later) on the LAST couple steps on my '84 400i re-fresh.

Seems like my Marelli Ignition control is shot (ironically, seems like possibly blown by the body shop jump starting the car).

The Independent Ferrari specialist I'm using (as he worked on the car for 10+ years w/ the prior owner, he know the vehicle and I have all his receipts) seems to think "no huge deal, I can use an American MSD unit, it will be more reliable and less sensitive than the stock Marelli unit, a LOT cheaper, but it will not be stock."

He cannot source the stock Marelli unit right now anyway.

    Thoughts?

Anyone know where to get one?

Worth the premium to stay stock?

Or, no worries, MSD (which I have used in many muscle cars over the years, I like them there) will be more reliable than the stock one?

    Long-term value hit in resale?

Anyway, this seems to be the LAST hurdle, we've found a factory ignition switch and a factory AC compressor, and we've changed all the belts, flushed and replaces all the fluids, etc.

    2 weeks or less!

    Thanks.

I've got 2 400s with MSDs. One has the larger unit and the other has the new smaller one. Both work perfectly.

If you find a nice Marelli, keep it on the side but use the MSD.

I've had a MSD unit on my 1982 for over three years, and it's worked better than the Marelli, faster cold starts etc. I believe I saw someone who had left the Marelli in place, not working, and hidden the MSD. Not me, but sounds like a nifty idea.

Most of us have gone with the MSD. You'll be fine, but keep your OE unit.
