Can anybody tell me what types of Marine (ship) Diesel Engines are common in the US? I am told that Japanese Engines such as Yanmar, Akasaka, Niigata, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi are not common in the US like they are in Asia. Does anybody have any information about the Marine Diesel Engine Industry in the US? Any help would be appreciated.
wow that was quick! Thanks for the fast reply! But...would you say Yanmar is common in the US? How do you know this information? Are you in the industry?
Little four cylinder Yanmars are common in sailboats. CATs, Detroits, etc. are used in 30'+ power boats, most of which are built in Taiwan.
Not sure what you are looking for or why. But if your using for fishing Yanmar is the best bet in my opinion. cats are good but I believe [ not sure ] that 3210 Cat is a motor to stay away from.
Diesel engines as propulsion for marine applications is becoming a think of the past. Diesel electric is starting to gain some traction. It is far more efficient and the prop can be turned in any direction in some configurations allowing the boat to make precision maneuvers with ease.
thanks for the responses guys! can anybody name a specific engine model they use or know is being used?
I have cats in my boat. My old boat had Volvo. I have a buddy with yanmars. That's the only boat I know that has them.
when you guys have your yachts repaired, do you take it to the dealership to repair who uses OEM parts? or do you guys take it to a repair shop who might use aftermarket parts?
