I've been talking about getting a Ferrari for the past few months.

Today is my birthday, and my wife gave me a sterling silver Ferrari keyring to hold the key for the imminent car. She ordered it directly from Ferrari, relying on her Italian language skills to send multiple emails in August, the most difficult month to deal with Italy.

Let's hear it for a lady who understands the F-Car.

    Very cool of your wife!

Mine didn't come around until I drove my car home the day I got it. Now most of my gifts are Ferrari-oriented...mugs, caps, pins, an alarm clock that projects the time with a Prancing Horse on the ceiling and wakes you up with engine sounds...and so on.

Spousal support is one of the the indicators of a great relationship. My wife encourages my working on the car, likes to ride in the car, but refuses to drive it. She understands and is ok with my time spent on F chat. I am a lucky guy.

That said, she still offers minute instructions, on how to drive the car. This can at times appproach the tiresome. Grates teeth.

When I was flogging "P" cars, the wives were referred to as "Porsche Widows", or as She Who Must Be Obeyed, depending on the dynamics of course.

If you are lucky enough to have someone who will even listen to your enthusiasm and even share in it, This an unusual and good thing.

jeez, a silver key ring??? it must be nice.

    all the best,
    chris

Thanks, all. As far as the car goes, I've been looking at the entry level Ferraris.

Here are three actual quotes from the lady in question, after I've shown her pictures of cars:

(When I mentioned 308 GT4 or Mondial) "Why do you want 4 seats? Be realistic - how often will you take all of us out? Twice? If this is a toy, get a two-seater."

And - "The 308 is nice, but I like the 328 even more. If you get a 308, you have to be sure to move up to a 328 in a few years."

And, in summation - "This is your dream car, so all it comes down to is, just get whatever car you really like in whatever color you like. Hey, they're all Ferraris!"

And John Lamour, I told Augustine we should meet next time you're in the area, so p'raps you'll see the lovely lady in person.

Cogratulations. I suggest you get the two seater. Everytime I see my car I want to take it out for a drive.

On our honeymoon in Italy 5 years ago, my wife agreed to rent a car (Fiat!)and drive from Venice to Maranello to do the factory tour.

(By the way, you MUST do this tour. You get to see and meet the people putting the cars together, watch the women stitching up the leather, etc. Incredible.)

I am sure that the truth be known there are many of us that are great supporters of our other half's love for their Ferrari. I have been doing the exterior/interior maintenance on Sophia because I too have an affection for the car and love to see her looking her very best. We spent last year's anniversary taking an owner's factory tour and believe me it doesn't take much from either of us to say let's go to Italy again, rent an Alfa and have a great time - I like to surprise him with the phrase "guess what I just did". When the Test Day appeared on the owner's site this past spring he phoned me and I think I broke the land speed record for running from the barn to the house to get on the computer. I returned his phone call with "well, we're going". It's always so very nice when you can share your passion with your spouse. I spent the past 15 years heavily involved in showing horses and he was my very best supporter, encourager and always there for me. For his birthday this year I made a book on Sophia comprised of any info I could find on the Mondial t coupe, photos, stats, etc. I spend many evenings using lots of ink, photo paper and time on the net into the wee hours for his surprise (I must say it turned out to be beautiful and was a most unusual gift).

    Carol

The four-seater Ferrari is the greatest! In fact, we stopped at the frame store today to pick a large poster of a Mondial t coupe that we had done - fit perfectly in the back seat - had we been in our two seater play car (SLK 350) the poster would still be at the store. Viva Mondials.

Not bashing the four-seaters - just pointing out that ma femme encouraged me not to be limited by practical concerns in my search. That's what's tough about this - each model has its appeal. I love the origami styling and space-age dash of the 308GT4 - the car just has fantastic lines inside and out. The Mondial is the first car I ever saw in person that impressed me as an exotic - saw a brand new one parked on the street in L.A. back in the mid-80's - so there's that nostalgic twinge. Plus I love cabriolets; there were two open-top Mondials at the Wil de Groot show in July, a black and a plum, and both looked fantastic. The 308 is the quintessential Ferrari for anyone who came of age in the 80's. I love the sound of carbed cars, so there's the attraction of an early 308, but I also think the design of that car is more fully realized in the 328.

I guess I'm not making any news here by saying there's no such thing as an undesirable Ferrari. Also, whatever Ferrari is our first doesn't have to be our last.

Price no object? I'd go for a 288GTO. I remember the impression it made on me when it hit the cover of AUTOMOBILE magazine, and it still does it for me today. Of course, price IS an object (dammit), so the list is limited to those mentioned above...
