I can’t see the result :-( Holy smokes, I was just cruising Auto Trader to see what’s out there for non-auction 550s and it appears dealers are waaaaaay out of touch with what the auction market is doing. I mean, duh to some extent, but much more than I imagined.
$179,200 ($160k without premium) https://www.hagerty.com/valuation-tools/past-sales/2003-ferrari-575/ZFFBV55A930131975/3d31f9bc-0262-4e45-8350-68730128382e Bidding at the 1 hr 34 min mark:
Had a Miura for 30 years. Parts just got too difficult to find and replaced it with the 550. Loved that car, preferred driving it to the 550. By EVERY metric the 550 is a better car, but I still preferred driving the Miura. Seriously regret selling it. Then again, selling it paid off the mortgages on my 2 properties and allowed me to retire early!!
The most significant visual change to the Muira was with the final SV version. It featured wider rear wheels/tires and wheel arches. A more aggressive look. The SV also (eventually) featured a split sump for the engine and transmission, while the earlier cars had one oil sump for both functions. The Miura S had some minor upgrades to performance, styling and creature comforts from the original car. I believe that the S was the first Muira to offer AC as well...
It's an interesting bifurcation. The top of the top seems as strong as ever. Anything else is deflating. For example, Ferrari Naples and Ferrari Ft.Lauderdale both had $330K and $300K 550s listed that are both sold in the last two weeks. As you repeatedly drive home, Tripp - perhaps the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen is a 550 selling for 993 C4S money!
While I’d give a thumbs up to a 993 C2 cab…it should be half a 575. Great day on Hwy 1 from Legget to the golden gate but I’d have rather been in a 575!
You know your Miura's well. I'm personally not a fan of the wide butt on the SV. But it is the best handling of the bunch, and the most refined. If I won a BIG lottery, I would get a Miura S.
I only like big butts on my cars! ;-) When we win the lottery, I will buy a Muira SV, a Ferrari 330GTS, a 330 GTC and a fractional share of NetJet or similar. I don't really need the cars, but we really do want to fly private!
A friend of mine has a 330GTC, drives it about once a year, it is a shame. I have a private pilots license so I will get something that I can fly myself, when I win the lottery.
If it flies, floats or fornicates…. I also was VFR and stopped after I couldn’t spare the time to keep current….flying is one of the things you really have to stay current and competent or it’s super scary. Most of my time was in a rental Piper Tomahawk and a Piper Warrior….slow and low!
Win big. My little Piper Arrow II went through a spell where for probably half a year my mechanic had a $5k bill waiting for me every month. Damn landing gear.
Makes a Maranello seem downright inexpensive! During COVID my wife and I got barefoot captain certified and EVERY single time we went out on a boat, I made a comment about how grateful I was for being able to rent.
On the rental topic….we have done that twice with an RV as well…the favorite was when we flew to Salt Lake City rented a huge RV enjoyed it for a long weekend fossil hunting in Wyoming and also enjoyed a huge sigh of relief when we gave it back to the host and flew home not having to worry about pulling a “cousin Eddie” or any of the storage or maintenance headaches.
Well, to be honest - with planes, if you fly a lot, you will lose your butt renting. Owning a neglected airplane will also hand it to you. The sweet spot is a GOOD, no needs airplane and a little more upfront expenditure. A trustworthy mech to do your prebuy is a big deal. Mine was NOT, sadly. I had a good little airplane overall, nothing dangerous really, but she suffered from some wicked deferred maintenance that SHOULD have been caught. ok, promise I’ll get back OT before we get moved to AviatorChat (which is what brought me to Fchat in the first place!)
I had a Long-ez, flew it about 300 hrs all over the country. It was a simple airplane and I did all my own maintenance, so those costs were nil.
I’m only considering fixed gear haulers this time. I need simplicity and space. So the yellow 550 on BAT yesterday finished as I suspected it would, given current events, trends, etc. I’m not sure the “YELLOW!” Phenomenon is quite as durable or important as some may assume, but I do love it, and I kinda want that car
This one was built around the same time as the three 575M prototypes, 123761, 123764, and 123765. Used 550 Maranello 2001 for sale in Plainview | Ferrari Dealer
This one is back on the market…this time on Cars & Bids. More to come when it ends. Market has softened since then so we’ll see what happens…. https://carsandbids.com/auctions/35MQ7oPZ/2000-ferrari-550-maranello?utm_source=listing_alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=button
