The good news is that Maseerati will still offer the cc transmission to enthusiasts. Key point- no mention of engine being enlarged to 4.7 liters on the auto equipped Quattroporte which was a rumor.

I found this on ************.com. Member Iwan originally posted it.

    MASERATI PRESENTS THE QUATTROPORTE AUTOMATIC
With a view to broaden its range even further, Maserati is about to launch the new Quattroporte Automatic alongside the current Quattroporte fitted with the DuoSelect gearbox.

The name, Quattroporte Automatic, describes the car’s main innovation. It is fitted with an automatic six-speed ZF gearbox, which ensures a smooth, fluid gear change while allowing for rapid shifting, for improved driving comfort.

The all-new transmission system results in a slightly different weight distribution ratio (49% front, 51% rear, vs 47% front 53% rear of the DuoSelect version with transaxle layout), but still preserves the extremely sporty nature of the Quattroporte. The torque converter also boosts the progression of the V8 Maserati engine at low to medium speeds, without limiting its power.

The international press will be given a preview of the Quattroporte Automatic at the Detroit Motor Show, and the car will be on sale worldwide from January.

Launched in 2003, the Quattroporte immediately grabbed the attention of the media and car enthusiasts alike, thanks to its sophisticated, elegant design, specification and performance-enhancing technology. The Quattroporte has always been at the forefront of the luxury sports saloon market, since it created this new category back in 1963. It is now considered the archetype of this market segment, which is being explored by other prestigious names in the car industry. Since 2003, the Quattroporte has received 28 awards from the world’s most prestigious media: a tangible sign of its popularity in the motor industry and with the public.

    tfazio,
At the Paris dealer meeting, Maserati confirmed that the auto equipped QP will have a 4.7L engine while the Duo-Select cars will keep on truckin with the 4.2L engine. I don't believe the 4.7L has any hp advantages but the torque band has been moved lower in the rpm range for better acceleration.

F of SF told me that they will have their demo car early January which I will test drive alongside the F1.

This is quite interesting, and I look forward to trying it

Should definitely increase sales for them and possibly cut down on people dumping them with 3K-4K miles due to the F1 dislikes.

we were in modena in february, the qp auto prototype DID have a 4.7l engine. could be coincidence , i'm not sure, but we were told that the auto version would be 4.7 and the f1 version would remain at 4.2

This certainly makes sense to overcome the loss thru the torque converter. It's good news, and I am very anxious to drive that new model.

When we got our QP, the F1 transmission was a big issue because the car is for my mom... who is no MS when it comes to driving. However, we just couldn't get over how beautiful the car was so we got it anyway. We've had it since May 2005, and even my mom has had no problems driving the car in auto mode for her day to day errands. Then when my dad and I put it into Manual and Sport mode it is more fun than any other 4 door sedan I've driven. For the auto, I think they should have put the column shifter ala BMW 7-series, would have looked better than the cheap looking shifter in the pic.

The purists will cry, but this was an option the QP really needed to increase sales and compete against other luxo barges.

Either way, where else can u get a fully auto or F1 derived tranny in a luxo-limo, its either or, Maserati still offers a unique package.

    I like it.

In aside, whats with the cheapo-looking climate control? The LED appears off of a timex. Even old 3 series BMWs have nicer looking LED displays, let alone bargin cell phones. Come on now Maser...:p

Now finally a Quattroporte I can buy to replace the ever service requiring CL500!

What do QP owners have to say about service issues with their QP's?

Well it's still a big step up from Ferrari, the 360 spider climate control looks the same as the one from my old Jeep Wrangler.

my wife bought her qp (i guessed delivered is a better term) in late jan. 05.

the only real problems we have had weren't mechanical, but rather "trim" related. we had a noisey tach cover, a piece of door trim come off, the pf logo come off, and now a door latch isn't releasing the door.

overall, i am so impressed, especially considering our car was an early car and not a learn as we go car.

my wife can't drive a standard transmission. she has no interest in trading our qp in for an "auto". i think that says enough.

nice looking, but you would think that they would attempt to cover up that it was from a BMW. Especially the "sport mode" where you pull back to upshift..

    There is no surprise here.

They stated that it's the 6 speed tranny from the 7 series BMW.

Actually, both are sourced from the ZF. Incidently Ferrari used to also source tranys from ZF (IIRC the 355 for example). Calling it 'just a BMW trany' is like calling my 328's injection system 'just BMW injection' (IIRC contemp. bmws used Bosch as well).

If I'm remembering things right here, ZF supply just about all the european prestige manufacturers with gearboxes, (though IIRC Mercedes' 7 speeder is an in-house item). IIRC the auto box in the Aston DB9 is a ZF and many regard that as the best auto with manual override on the market. IIRC (again) the new Jag XK auto box is a ZF item - also very highly regarded.
