Hey, I found these pictures, dated 1941 "Maserati 2000", I think it is showing a Maserati 4 CS 100 #1114 ? on the streets of Addis Abeba, capital of Ethiopia in 1941. I think really interesting a Maserati at that time in Ethiopia. How did it get there? I assume a family member of king "Haile Selassie" was the owner. Who knows more? MR. BÄUMER perhaps. regards George Mountain Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
There is an article in "Classic & Sportscar", April 2001, on 4CS #1114, which suggests that indeed this car was in Eritrea during WWII. It was originally fitted with a roadster body by Brianza in 1932, and later fitted with a single-seater body as shown in your snapshots. The car still exists, with the roadster body having been recreated in England.
Fantastic photos! Well, yes, #1114 was in Addis Adeba in that period. But there was also another prewar Maserati there. This 2nd car found its way to EU in the 80ies and was sold as a basket case. Not sure about the whereabouts today. #1114 is now owned by a very nice Gentleman in the US. If it is this car on your photos I do not know as the body doesn`t show any silimarities to the car when on display on a Turin show in the early 30ies. Particulary the rear looks very much "Bugattistic" or a bit Tipo 26. But- I can be wrong here! In my archive I have 1 pic of the T26 and 2 photos of the smaller car (#1114??) in Addis Adeba. But the smaller one had got another -and different- body when this 2 pics were taken: in 1951. Ciao! Walter
