Sorry if this has been asked previously. I did a search and could not find it. Where would the engine # be stamped on the block of a 3500? I see that the engine number is stamped on the data plate, and that it is the same as the chassis number, but I'd like to verify that the engine that's in the car now came with the car. Thanks in advance!
OK, so I'm getting some early feedback that the number is most likely stamped at the rearmost portion of the engine, or that it is stamped on the head between the timing gear covers, and not on the block at all. I'm also hearing that on some examples it is not stamped anywhere. More questions - on cars with 3 digits, was a four digit number stamped on the block, like car #401 would be stamped "0401", for example. Are there any other numbers which get stamped on other locations on the block, like say an internal number, for example? This particular engine has a 3 digit number stamped in an inconspicuous location, which I've been told by some 3rd party mechanics may have nothing to do with the serial number stamping. Just to protect the seller, I don't feel confident revealing any actual serial #s in case we find that the block is not original.
The VIN number on a 3500 is located on a horizontal pad just below the cross over throttle linkage on the passenger side of the block behind and below the intake manifold. My experience is that all 3500's had the block stamped to match the VIN. Others argue that non stamped blocks are also original. I believe these are replacement engines that were done under warranty or just purchased from the factory when engines were available, A three digit number shows up as a three digit number without a zero in front. See attached photo from my 3500GT. hope this helps, Larry Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for the information, it is extremely helpful. I've been getting my information from a number of race car mechanics who work on 250Fs and the like, so this is good information about the GTs.
