  1. Which year (s) are the best or most desirable? Any idea what to expect to pay for a driver, or a complete project? Any words of advice? Thanks

  7. Hi Walter, I have only seen the car from about 75 feet. It's sitting at the end of his driveway with a wood block behind the tire, in a really nice subdivision. His garage is a two car, and you can see the streaks in the black paint where it has been sitting for some time. I almost ran off the road when I saw it. I am going to leave a note, and try to take some pictures. What specs should I look for ? Is the vin by the windshield or?

    Joey,
the VIN-plate is either on the left or right side in the engine bay. The TOURING-no. is stamped on a plate that is placed on the top of the firewall in the engine bay under the front screen. If possible, take some pictures of the car incl. interior!
    Many thanks.

That is a VERY pretty one: when I was at Motorcar Gallery we had a Sebring in those colors and Mario bernardi bought it during a visit and sold it immediately in Germany. I like that leather color a lot.

The car was wonderful!! You could clearly see the very good paint-quality this cars had in the 50ies/early 60ies! The 1st. owner in Germany was very keen to prevent all that fantastic patina. Also the leather is still original. I made a veeeeeery good offer to the current owner - but he sait "No! Non! Njet! Nada! Nein" - and I can understand that!

Are you sure I know the VIN? Don`t do a Quiz-show with me here, please! I have difficulties to go thru my register of about 700 cars from that series to find it. If you have the VIN then post it here and I can fill up some gaps if I have something.

No, I don`t have a register of Swedish cars and I am still waiting for that coming from Sweden as I was promised to check with the owners of those cars if they permit that infos etc., etc., etc.........! If Ferraris are researched like that by asking their owners for permission to do so we would know only 50% of their history today!

    Ciao!

“If Ferraris are researched like that by asking their owners for permission to do so we would know only 50% of their history today!”

    +1000

In some cases people do not understand the reason why anyone would want their chassis number: some incidents I recall:

-A blue Mistral coupe I was photographing in the street in Neuilly near Paris in about 1980, the owner came out and said: you know you are not allowed?!
I was very shocked and annoyed at that bizarre negative attitude so immediately looked at him straight in the eyes and said passion gives every right!: I was 15 and he did not know what to say after that:)!

-In Vienna during a Ferrari meet that was very closed off, stand offish an American tourist passing by happened to be a Ferrari connoisseur and started taking photos and they got upset and forbid him.

-In Monthlery during the coupes de l'age d'Or which was France's equivalent of the Monterey weekend I once politely asked, 20 years ago, two young French guys, in the 20's for the chassis number of the 275GTS they had and they said what is this we don't know you absolutely not very rudely so since then I don't ask for chassis numbers in Europe unless I have been personally introduced.

Also some owners don't understand at all the idea of chassis number gathering, did not know anything like that exists and think you are a jealous communist or with the income tax investigation team.

Right now there is a Khamsin that interests me in Sweden a very nice dark blue car and the owner is declining to give me the chassis number: a Swedish fchatter is trying to explain to him that I just want the chassis number and the car's details and history, not information about him...very frustrating because I was born in Stockhom and, incredibly, the Los Angeles area couple who bought my car fell in love with Khamsins when visiting Stockholm as they stumbled on the car by chance in front of the Grand Hotel across from the royal palace: what are the probabilites of that: incredible...so I would really like to know which Khamsin it is (Walter it may be in your notes, I will be going through them in much greater detail this weekend and consolidate the two databases).

Then you get owners who are a bit confused: two examples:

There is a very interesting Ferrari 206SP in the US which has a body like a miniature 512M, open cockpit. That cars owner, can’t remember his name, Acantoloopy perhaps, has always refused articles or wanted to control the texts…so the car has never been covered properly
By Cavallino or the Ferrari Market letter or any lesser publication.

Then the day I photographed my absolute favourite car, the one I use as my Fchat nickname, Nembo spyder 1777, the first and by far most beautiful of the Nembos, exactly 10 years ago, on April 25, 1998 in Geneva, mister WVS a very nice gentleman who kindly made the car available for me said during the photoshoot that my article and the historical information would be copyrighted to him! That was heresy of course and I politely told him so: the owner of a historically significant car or painting or of anything of value is only the custodian of that item but cannot in any way control manipulate, or alter its history which are public domain. He then realized that he was misguided and forgot any such idea so he was smart enough to reconsider (he has since passed away unfortunately) but some people very occasionally cling to such attitudes…and end up cutting a car off from the world for years.

    Just my 2 cetns.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Now that's one point I can appreciate. Some states here tax your car annually based upon it's value. The less said about them the better. I don't live in one of those states right now.
I understand your guys facination over chassis numbers and wanting to have history on some of these cars but you have to understand that some people just don't want all this information all over the internet. If it's posted anywhere it's everywhere. I'm also not certain how significant it really is for cars like the Ghibli, Indy, Espada ... These are not rare cars.
