Before opening these pictures I thought wires on a Khamsin would look hideous, but I love it!

Yes, and an Isly-brothers or Trammps cassette:)

Don't worry Marc, I quite like the wheels it came with, fake centerlock and all, and want to keep this car as original as possible.

Further updates on my old tub!

Decided to check out having the drivers seat seem repaired. The last owner was a ex England prop forward, read 270lb or 120kg. The entire interior had been 'painted' and not terribly well as it was quite sticky and didnt allow the leather to breath no matter how much I softened it and fed it.

I took one of the seats to a specialist tonight and we have decided to strip back the old leather as best as possible, then repaint in the original colour and hopefully get a much nicer and certainly cleaner finish.

I have had the windscreen back in. Looking forward to some dry runs in the wet now!

A few minor glitches to sort and hopefully will have the car looking good and running perfectly by mid may. Still sobbing about missing the 40th, though.

now i just have another 5 projects to sort!!!

Of the supposed 74 RHD Khamsin's manufactured, does anyone know how many still survive and in what Countries they are?

Well theres a website in the UK that uses the registration details to determine how many exist there...It seems that there are up to 19 Khamsins of which around 13 are regularly licensed. At the moment there are only 10 on the road there.

    Hi All
    Interesting Info about the UK.

Off the top of my head that makes:
    14 or 15 in Australia
    1 or two in NZ
    19 in the UK
    1 South Affrica

If there were 65 RHD cars Made I wonder where on the plannet the other 29 are?

There are 3, possibly 4 in South Africa.
What about Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore..

So, just like with the total number of Khamsins built, there is also confusion about how many RHD's?

In any case, these are now ar least 30 years old. Many may exist in title only, but were crushed/dismantled a long time ago.

Too busy for long post but:

Japan 31 cars but they were all LEFT hand drive the wanted them like in Europe.

UK: many cars have rotted away between the early 80's and a few years ago due to the disastrous humidity and poor rust resistance.

    Singapore: zero.

Jack which would be the 4th in ZA besides 435, 439 and 012? very curious!

423 is in NZ now but was originally an Australain delivery car.

Julian: thanks for that, what on earth is SORN, sounds painful?! thanks for clarifying that.

In conclusion the UK according to Andy Heywood's files had at least 50 cars: I just counted 50 exactly (all right hand drive not counting here any lhd visiting the Uk or living there)

Yes Andy has notes on exactly 50 RHD cars on the ground in the UK between 1974 and now, however some of there may have gone to the far east afterwards: it is the case for 365 actually (now in HK) and 383 (now in Sri Lanka). Conversely 339 many years in HK is now back in the UK.

The first RHD was 301, parted out long ago.

Obviously this is more RHD cars than believed.

Julian can you track down LUE 162 V?

As discussed here long ago I can't figure this one out (see photos) and have found these photos years ago: I really think it could be 381 (Paul's car, by the way Paul keep up the good work great stuff!) which was the Maserati UK historic press fleet car into the 1990's or even early 2000's and while some of you in the UK including Bal said oh it was not registered like that well sometimes a car gets a plate put on it for a photo shoot: I know of a Ferrari 512S that did the Tour Auto a decade ago and they slapped a Texas plate on it they had found in a corner of the garage!

So think laterally and outside the box!

When Interviewed Ermanno Cozza in his office in July 2005 he said 71 RHD total...

I will ask itemized sales per country RHD.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

    Have to go.

    best regards,

    Marc

    Hi All,

That web site whilst useful for a glance is based on information that may not be maintained very well. Hopefully with new systems DVLA will sort out it's data in the future.

SORN= Statutory Off Road Notification. This is what we now have to do if we do not wish to license a car for road use (e.g. over winter etc) Otherwise you have to have the car licensed, it is a way the government tried catch all the illegal folk. I can't be bothered with the admin so leave mine taxed for road use all year long.

Interesting that Andy Heywood thinks 50 cars made it here to the UK, like the rest I wonder how many are really left....

    Hi all

my car was the Maserati UK heritage car and stayed in their collection until the previous owner bought her in mid 2000's. I am in the office so don't have exact info.

it has always had the same registration ALX 640S in the Uk and it has never been changed. My car was owned by someone in london for many years and was serviced by Colin Clarke who does work for me too. he recalls the car from then.

Also a few photos of the car used eg in Jeremy Clarksons 'top 100 cars' and several advertisments all with the same registration number.

It was originally the gold colour and the trim was slightly darker than it is now, but going back to the same colour soon.

In the UK you can put an older registration number on a car, ie form 1975 on a 1977 but not a newer one eg a 1979. It could be a cut and paste pic, but otherwise not my car

Anyone put upgraded electronic ignition systems on their car to replace original?

    Paul

    Marc,

What do you have on 002? This should obviously be a LHD car. According to Ian H. it is also in SA.

Where did I get a number of 73 LHD cars? If 50 UK, 19 Oz (?), 3 to SA originally, we'd be missing just 1. My guess is that no more than 35-40 RHD K's have survived, if that.

Number plates are a bad way to identify cars. In many countries plates can be transferred from car to car as well as from owner to owner. Chassis-numbers are the way to go.

Why would you want to do that Paul? The only thing you need to do is to move the box from its' silly position in the nose to the back of the inner wheel-well, and it'll never get wet again. #439 has it there, and #435 will have it there soon as well. I have a pic if you want, my allowance to post pics is exhausted and I tried twice to pay my subs but without the desired result.

Jack 002 was destroyed for the crash test in late December 1973. This was confirmed to me a few weeks ago as I finalized my Khamsin chapter for the book.

There is no doubt it has been destroyed and scrapped long ago.

Whatever car you mention it is another #.

Several early cars were built in late 73 yes.

I think 1 RHD car went to Malta but not sure yet.

I always go by chassis number but when all I have is photos then I have no other choice.

The mystery car could possibly be 427 but since there were so few gold cars in the UK (and 325 has a smooth nose) I will stick to my view that the car in the photos is 381 but as Paul said it might just be a fibbing situation (English word for not entirely ethical solution finding).

To be clear Andy's notes are itemized per car: hence at least 50 RHD K's have been seen at least once in the Uk and are identified by chassis number.

On that note I hope someone goes to the Bonhans UK auction in a few days, would love to hear first hand opinion on 335 which seems very interesting!

    best regards,

    Marc

I'll send Ian a mail to see what car he identified as 002. He was quite adament about this. Maybe I got it all wrong in my excitement of viewing a 60-car private collection!

I have #385, a RHD UK car imported to Denmark and then Norway several years ago.

I have some of the papers on the car at home, including information on the former license plate number the car had before it was exported (MUM-something). The car is partly converted to LHD, but will most likely never be rebuilt. I'll use it as spares to rebuilt another incomplete Khamsin. It's better to have one sound and complete than two wrecks on a barn.

No parts will be sold from #385 until I have full control of what I need to keep myself, and that will not happen in 2012.

I also have #008, but that car is complete and running fine.

    Best regards

Paul email with photos sent, the car as mentioned was also in the CAR magazine (UK) May 81 issue test drive article and looks just like yours...

Marius good that you are using 385 to rebuild another, a great effort, look forward to that!

got the email and pic thanks. I do have that article and it is definitely not my car.

That reg number LUE162V no longer exists on DVLA in UK.

It is a similar colour to mine. The original colour is about two shades darker than mine and is now a shinier version of that colour

    Marc,

Apparently 002 is alive and kicking. Maserati red with a cream interior, ex Geneva show car and bought straight from the show-floor. LHD. Year quoted is 1972, but appears to me that should be 1973?

I will try to get photo's of her, as well as of the chassis number and plates. Are there any obvious differences with normal Khamsin production models?

    Stop the press!!

If this is correct, it's very important information. From what Marc has stated earlier, 002 was used in a crash test, and is most likely not rebuilt after such a damage.

Maybe this can explain the missing 006? Could this be 006 with 002 identity?

I guess Marc has called you already ;-)

    Kind regards
    Marius
