Just bare aluminum. Mine was a USA emissions car with air pump and thermal reactors. They get very hot so maybe that's a difference?
Hi all, Khamsin 178 is nearing completion but I still need to sort a few LHM leaks, notably at the lamp lifters and inside the car at the switch for the seat adjustment. Any solutions here? Is it the black hydraulic lines becoming brittle and needing replacement? Any help in keeping 178 from losing all its Citroen juice is appreciated! Thanks, Tom, Belgium
Hi Tom, The seat adjustment switch has rubber seals which sit behind brass bushes. From memory the pipes are held in place via spring clips. These seals need replacing and I had mine done here in the UK by Pleiades. The lamp lifters, well this depends on where on them the leak is. Usually at the piston or at the pipe unions, but either way they'll need rebuilding. Again mine were done by Pleiades. Not known (to me) about the pipes becoming brittle, but I suppose that could happen. You may want to check other junction connections while you're at it if not already done. Headlight lifter switch, junction box on A Post (on my RHD car this was on the RHD A post), Junction box on LHD inner wing in engine bay, Seat lifting ram. I found that as I fixed one another one would pop, resulting in me biting the bullet and having a load done in one go. Others may be able to recommend suitable specialists in Europe. Hope that helps. Bal
Hi Tom, I have very recently collected my car from having the LHM system totally overhauled by a classic Citroen specialist in England. Although I didn't see the internals and sealing methods he described it to be a metal to metal type olive kind of seal with an "O" ring as well that he replaced. The photo is of the new and old plunger seal on the braking side of the system, this is where the pedal operates the system the seal was perished and obviously replaced.... I thought it could have been due to incorrect fluid, however my specialist confirmed this was a natural failure due to age and that the fluid was not in bad shape (although the system and reservoir / filter were cleaned). Not sure about the seal adjuster but the seals would probably similar throughout the system for the same sizes. The black flexible hoses are low pressure returns and will perish and need replacing. You need to make sure the new hose material is compatible with LHM fluid otherwise the fluid will attach the material. When were the 3 spheres pressure tested? I will gladly pass on and highly recommend my LHM specialist as he has the correct attitude and knows the LHM system in its entirety. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Bal, How's things? Are you coming to the Italian car day at Brooklands this Saturday? (I know its a long way from you). Rich
Hi Rich, Pretty cool thanks for asking. Been using the 4200 more recently and enjoying it a lot. Alas I won't be able to come down this weekend as I'm in for a small procedure on a kidney stone on Friday. We shall have to arrange a meet up somewhere this summer, the Khamsin needs a good run. Good to hear you've got the hydraulics all sorted out now. Bal
Hi Bal, Oh, hope all goes well Friday, and your recovery is swift. It would be really nice to link up sometime this year. I have tickets for the Silverstone classic in July on Sunday. The Maserati club are doing a celebration. The Khamsin is on the display and a track parade, which should be cool. Are you planning on going? Yes, its nice to know that everything is all sorted and a system expert has checked everything to ensure all is good. Cheers, Rich
today i stumbled across two bits which i put away in a 'safe' place whilst the car was being redone last year. the first is a hard rubber cover for the space saver spare and the second is an interestingly fabricated aluminium piece which slid under the spare with the bent bit towards the hinged grill. presumably to make pulling the spare out a bit easier. any one come across these? Hi Rich I'll be there, although I'm not taking the Khamsin but my pocket rocket Abarth 130TC which needs a good run! I'll look out for you! Doug
Paul, I've seen several covers for the spare wheel, but none of them looked like this. No idea about the aluminium bracket, perhaps someone else does. AFAIK, there were 2 items in that space, besides the spare itself: A cover, and a foam piece to lock the space below the rad. Best, Jack.
hey Jack, the foam bit i have too albeit in awful shape. the wheel cover, as far as i know, was to protect the dirty blown tyre once in the luggage compartment. it is too big for the spare and mine was as new stuck in the cubby hole in the rear. the aluminium bit is curious. it is too well made to be a personal thing yet too 'hand made' to be off the shelf. when i got the car it was installed as if it had always been there. and with the rubber sheet and the foam the spare was very snug indeed. who knows? not so important but some one spent time making this alu thing. best p
Paul, Yes, the bag serves the purpose you mention. There was a cover for over the spare, I have never seen a real one, just some pics on ebay. There's no cubby in the back of my car, a RHD one with the battery in that space, and I don't have the bag. I wonder where they put the tool- and jack-rolls on a RHD car, there's basically no other space than behind the seats. Best, Jack.
as you know mine is RHD too. by cubby i mean the space where the battery sits. there is some room next to the battery where i fit the tool roll, lack and the spare tyre adapter. but it is very tight. the circular rubber sheet fits exactly on top of the spare. the alluminium bit underneath it towards the front. it puzzled me but it somehow does not look home made. P
Hey Paul, The aluminium bit may be someone's attempt at making it easier to pull the spare out as you say. I know it can be a PIA. The rubber may also be another attempt at protecting the space saver. I've found that rain/ water can make it past the grilles and end up in the spare wheel. The original foam can only then be a bad thing for corrosion of the rim. I've heard of the bag to put the full size into once removed from the car so that the boot (trunk) area is protected etc. Not got one with my car but I have seen pictures The jack & tools do go in on top or on the side of the battery. It is a tight fit but that's where they're supposed to live. Cheers Bal
Hi Bal, yes that is where mine sit and it is not something you can just chuck in in a hurry. i simply thought that since everything was there on my car that there could be a chance this aluminium strip was original. it looks like it was made by someone with panel work tools. i've got the bag too. can take some pics if needed. P
Hi Doug, Be good to see the Abarth, but your Khamsin would have kept mine company. I'll PM you my mobile number so we can meet up. Cheers, Rich
Hi Paul, Could you take some pictures of the bag, never really thought of what to do with the dirty main wheel when removed... Thanks, Rich
Look towards the back of this picture and you will see a lonely Khamsin parked there! The picture was taken April 7, at an event to help celebrate the coming of the new Maserati dealership in Knoxville, TN...The event was held at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. It was great to get the K out for that event. The restaurant is about a 30 mile drive from my house and the car worked superbly. Nice weather is getting here and I hope to get the car out more.. The Foam rubber part is essential for the car. It is to deflect air up to the rad and to prevent it from just going under the rad. I don't have the protective cover but could do with one otherwise the carpet in the boot would be a mess! I know some guys just buy a full size wheel and tyre and keep in in the boot in case of a puncture. Can be an idea of driving a long distance at night. My spare was in pretty poor condition. I had the wheel powder coated and found a inner tube for the spare as I couldn't get a good seal. I wouldn't like to go any distance on the spare
ok here are some pictures. this was never used by the look of it. seems to be made for 215 and 225 may be a difficult fit. it is of sturdy but supple vinyl and the finish is surprisingly good. the two opposite zippers open the bag about halfway. p Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
