Good morning Richard, Pretty much the only yellow Khamsin it likely could be is 409 which was butter yellow and rusty years ago and has since been restored and repainted red, Tony B's ex car. Neither color was its original shade. First 2 photos. So this would have been going back a few years. The only other possibility is AM120US1272, one of the "magnificent seven" fly yellow cars as I call them, all US cars, only 3 of which are still fly yellow. It is owned by G.S. an American recluse, it is one of my favorites which I inspected October 2007 in northeastern Italy near Udine where he then lived. Third and fourth photos. He only ever showed up at one event in it in Italy. He has since move to the UK. So this would have been in recent years. Which one do you think you saw? Thanks in advance Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Marc, I have been looking in my files for any photographs from the day. It was a number of years ago. I can only guess the photos were taken on an old mobile phone (which will not happen again as I have bought a Nikon) I believe it could be 409 as you have described, although I could not confirm this. I do remember it was in a poor state with corrosion around the windscreen area. Sorry that I cant supply more details or clarification Cheers, Richard
Hello again Marc, With regards to the photo of the Porsche and Maserati in Acton I asked the guy from drive tribe and he has replied with the following- "Let me just time-travel back 32 years Richard.... All I know is it had UK plates and the street name was Tudor Gardens, near West Acton tube station. I hope that helps. BTW - I took that photo and the one of the AC 428 consecutively, as I just happened to have the camera in the car and I'd never seen a Khamsin or an AC in the metal before. Cheers."
Hi, My first challenge is to drive it from McGraths to home! If it survives that without any major issues then I'll venture further afield. There is the Sunday Scramble, at Bicester Heritage, on the 23rd. That's not far from me so I'll go to that and take it from there. Brooklands is a couple of hours from me, as I'm in Leamington, so I'll see how things go. Like I say the car has lots of issues. Many from under use, so I'm keen to get out and about in it.
Richard, Thank you very much for your kind answers to my pestering questions So you saw 409 at that concours, no doubt about it and the car that person photographed in 1985 was an unknown white RHD UK Khamsin, the likeliest answer. Mark best of luck with 311 yes to do gradually larger loops from home seems the wisest route, enjoy it! Best regards, Marc
Looking for brave men who've mastered Khamsin technical peculiarities... I noticed in the electrical diagram (pages 207,208 of the 'use and maintenance' manual) that our beloved engineers at the factory forgot to list what part no. 113 actually is. The parts numbering on page 207 stops at part no. 112! It's related somehow to the solenoid and microswitch (part no.44,42) cutting out the vacuum advance at idle. Or at least, i think so. Can someone tell me what 113 is, and how the whole 113+microswitch+solenoid system should be working? It seems to be different system than on siblings like Bora, Merak? See attached photo. I'm looking for a possible culprit of my car *sometimes* popping and losing power when i accelerate hard through all gears or just when cruising above 3000rpm for longer periods of time with a warm engine. Things quickly turn back to normal below 3000rpm or when accelerating more modestly (after the engine loses excess unburnt fuel?). Fuel pressure was tested and OK. My first thought was that the BOSCH electronic ignition might be failing intermittently and above 3000rpm. But then i read (in this thread) also about leaks in the vacuum system causing wrong ignition timing through faulty vacuum advance. Side note: My interior fresh air also gets blocked sometimes (vacuum operated flap not open) until i lift foot from accelerator pedal (more vacuum). Another indicator that i have a leak in the vacuum system? Thanks for the help! Bart Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Bart, to make a long story short: yes, it sounds your vacuum system has a leak at least apparently. the "113 device" is a pneumatic valve (one of the 2 weird weber cups on the right front fender) which is operated by the 12V microswitch at the back of the carburetor manifold. This weber-valve cuts off the while lifting the throttle. (This feature is not to be mixed up the automatic timing advance!) Best from Berlin, Marek BTW. If your weber cups don't have the sticker anymore, let me know. I got some spares.
Many thanks for your reply Marek. The 2 weber valves (solenoids as i called them) are listed as parts 44 and 45. So 113 looks to be yet another component of this system. I read something about such cut off systems (on a Delorean i believe it was) also involving a thermostat that prevents operation of the vacuum advance at lower temperatures (as well as lifting foot off throttle). Could 113 be a thermostat? BTW - Having witnessed the thoroughness of your restoration work, i have no doubt that you understand fully how this works on your car. Makes me think that 113 may be a part that's not present on all cars. Maybe a later addition that got added to the electrical diagram but not to the parts list. (or other way around, a part that was removed but not taken off electr. diagram) thanks, Bart
Hi Mark, I am thinking of going to the Sunday Scramble, at Bicester Heritage, on the 23rd. I have never been to that before... Good luck with the drive home...
I'd like to echo the welcome the others have already given you. The first drive will be very memorable, my own being from Edinburgh to Birmingham. Watching the temp gauge and struggling with 1st and reverse gears when the car was hot. At least McGraths are sorting your car out so that should give you confidence. They're a really great bunch of guys. Leamington is not a million miles from me so hopefully we may get to cross paths. After all how many khamsins in the midlands... Enjoy and feel free to ask for any help and advice. And I still I'll smile when I drive mine even after 10 years of ownership. Regards Bal
Hello Marc This car was for sale by GT Classics in 2012 and is now for sale again. Although the Carrozzeria and Autovettura numbers are shown, the Chassis-No is not. Do you know what number this car is ? MASERATI KHAMSIN | Sports Classics Best regards Roger
I'll have to watch the temp gauge as the spare wheel is missing. Andy mentioned a Saab wheel that fits. Anyone know which Saab? There is someone selling a 9000 wheel which is a 4 bolt 108mm pcd. Will that fit the hole under the radiator? Just need to help the air go through the rad rather than under it.
Hello Bart, yup, Part 44 ist the valve which cuts off the vacuum, what I ment, so part 113 needs to be allocated. Some owners eliminated the vacuum switch and set the ignition without vacuum influence. This should work for your ignition (and back fire is limited on good tuned car anyway). Make sure to the find any leak on the vac system, to avoid air coming to the intake manifold (causing lean fuel mixture). Good luck! Marek
Hello Roger, Crazy busy day plus phone line gone bad, so no time for long answer. I feel it is 1126, photos in red attached before the bumper conversion in Stuttgart, so different rear glass (not the exact same sticker) US Ralph Nader pimples sidelights taken out during a repaint, no mirrors yet on the car but red US automatics in Europe? Not many so yes likely this one and the owner did not respond when I emailed him about 2 months ago, as happens when people have sold a car. This one was new to Florida silver black; old scans attached and later owned there by someone I knew but long before we got acquainted there. Then it went to Monaco and Germany. More when I have time. What do you think? Best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Marc the one in Stuttgart has red carpets and different sticker, as you say; I have photos of it with Munich plates (M PM 320) and another not quite distinguishable (possibly RA 76 H) with Stuttgart plates, this must be a different Serial number; pictures taken at Retro Classics in Stuttgart. the one in Belgium, I am sure now, is 1186, same car as advertised 2009 by Beverly Hills Club, same sticker, same beige carpets as first advertisement in Belgium by GT Classics in 2012. In the meantime the carpets have been changed to black. Not sure if it is 1126 as you say, but 1126 was definitely auctioned at the Nürburgring in 2001, no clue if it was still silver or resale red already at the time. Hello Marc here the pictures of the other red automatic, with red carpets Best regards Roger Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I picked up the Khamsin yesterday. I drove it the 70 miles home. Generally it went well but it did seem to be suffering from an intermittent firing problem. It's fantastic to be behind the wheel at last. The gearbox needs a rebuild, the firing issue needs sorting, had to tape up the rear hatch to stop the exhaust fumes, there is lots to do.... but it's great. Congrats Mark Yes a few things to sort out but in this case a running restoration is the best choice as those who start a ground up one end up stuck for years unless they have a huge budget. This is how I was handling my car and it was going well at the time. Keep us informed and best of luck! MS PS: Roger, sorry for delayed answer will catch up tomorrow morning.
Hi Mark, Cars looking good. I went to Bicester heritage Sunday Scramble today. When I arrived, I parked next to a light blue XJS (I was in a black XJS). When I returned to the car to get ready to leave, I spoke to the driver and his Italian wife. We spoke about the Jaguars etc- And he said that he was coming with a friend but he had fuel issues in a car he had recently purchased and had to return home... A Maserati Khamsin, black, from Bill Mcgraths.... How strange was that, for me to park next to your friend... BR Richard
Yes, that was Lee. We got part way there and the car started playing up. I turned round rather than risk it. The car is generally fine, it's just sometimes when you give it a little gas, it coughs and splutters. If you accelerate hard it goes fantastically but it's that middle ground that it gets a little temperamental. Gave me a chance to clear the garage out though!!
Hello Roger, At last I have a minute. You are correct for 1186, I had saved all the data and photos when Beverly Hills Club advertised it -a few below but very low res- and then in January of this year a friend of mine mentioned he had seen it at a garage in Belgium thus informing me it was now in Europe but I did not think of it when going through possible candidates, mea culpa I will self flagellate with a trident shaped implement. I need to go beyond my photo archives and do a big Excel document but I need to clone myself first to have the time... Re 1126 I lost touch with the owner who had contacted me I guess he does not open that mailbox anymore. Email did not bounce back. He had bought a bumper kit from the US and was about to fit it at the time.
